I'm heading out this week to visit the Oregon Coast. I'm staying at a family favorite resort, one of two, that we frequented quite a bit when I was a kid. One of the things we'd do was bring some cards and board games to wile away the time. If it was Christmas break, we would bring the newest game with us--Battleship was a big HIT one year (ha! See what I did there?). I remember many summer breaks setting up ongoing sessions of Monopoly. We'd play a couple of different versions of Solitaire, some Slap Jack, gin rummy, and who knows what else! It was a long time ago...memories fade!

What classic board or card game did you play most often during school breaks?

I'm not taking any cards, but I've played a mobile game called Township for nearly 8 years on my phone. It's coming with!

I have a pack of plastic, water proof Uno cards that I've taken with us on pretty much every vacation for the last 15 years. When I was a kid, we would play Scrabble, Parcheesie and my sister and I were big Crazy Eights card game fans.

Of course, Scrabble! That was definitely a go-to. And Crazy Eights reminds me of Go Fish...we played both! I don't know why we never played Parcheesie!

Big hit lol love it!

We would go camping/hunting every fall and always played Chutes and Ladders in the trailer. Good times!

We didn't play a ton of board/card games while I was growing up (some random games of Cribbage or Rook might happen, but few and far between).
We've certainly changed that for our family -- we now own nearly 200 board and card games and try to play as much as possible with our kids. That's not quite as often, the older they get (with jobs and school and friends, the days are busier), but some of my greatest memories the past 10 years or so has been board game nights/days/weekend pouring through the huge collection we have :-)

How do you even choose? Do you have a game selector set up on a See & Say? Do you have them curated by month of the year? Is there a spreadsheet and is a random number generator involved? Curious minds want to know! I so appreciate the intentional effort put in to family game nights. Keep 'em going as long as you can!

Haha. I use the BGG (BoardGameGeek) app to keep track of what games/expansions we own. It can keep track of each game's number of plays, who played each time, who won each game (as well as the scores for games that use method of determining a winner). It allows us to see, at a glance, how many times a game was played and when the last play was.
As for how we choose what to play? It varies. Sometimes we each choose a few options and draw names from a cup until we've played as long as we like. Sometimes we choose a competitive game to start and whoever wins picks out next game, and repeat.
Sometimes we play based on a theme (only cooperative games or Tiny Epic games or card builder games, etc).
And yes, sometimes we use a spreadsheet that started with every game listed and we play a couple and remove them so that we continue to play games that don't get as much attention.
We've had so many hours of laughs sitting around the table playing games over the years!

Of course there's an APP FOR THAT!!! What was I thinking?!? I like the idea of winner picks next game, unless they win all the time! LOL I want to be part of someone's game night. I remember playing something one night at a women's retreat, and the laughing was uncontrollable! Something about being dead tired but amped up makes everything funny. Had a lot of fun at bunco games over the years.

We took Skyjo (card game) on our recent beach trip and it was fun for the adults to play in the evenings after the grandkids went to bed.

I played a ton of Yahtzee growing up.

Now, always cards, and we play a lot of a card games but a favorite is called Castle and then regular poker, blackjack and Pai Gow Poker. If I'm with my kids, Irish Poker, haha! (Yahtzee lended well for me learning poker hands, haha!) We also play Rummikub or Mexican Train a bunch. If people know how to play, I like Catan too.

Had to go read the rules for this one! Oh my goodness...I cracked up when I read that the player who triggers the end of the round must have the lowest score in that round. If anyone else ties or has a lower score, the round-ender's points for that round are doubled!!! Sounds like a good time!

I agree about Yahtzee and Poker! A long time ago I got into watching Poker Stars on TV...and for some reason my (now ex) husband thought that meant I really wanted to PLAY Texas Hold 'Em so he bought me a game for my PSP. Now, why did *I* have a PSP, as I'm not really a gamer? Because I won one from a McDonald's promotion back in 2006 (I think...somewhere in there)...right before it was STOLEN when our house was broken into! Anyway, my poker career was short-lived!

We used to have poker tournaments years ago with friends. All the rules, buy-in, and everything. I happened to win our initial year - $600 - I bought 2 car seats with my winnings, lol!

I don't usually play in AC (near me), specially blackjack - cause I don't like to follow the rules, but when I went with my hubby I got mad at him. When TH was really big, we waited in line, then they told us what table to go to... and he followed me and sat with me... we shouldn't sit together if we want to win. Anywhoo.... I was winning and he was up, then asking me for money to keep playing, lol!

Divide and conquer! Don't play at the same table! Even I could figure that out! LOL And congrats on funding the car seats! That's how you do it!

We always take games on vacations! We do a lot of camping, so it's great to have games in the trailer in case weather isn't cooperating for hikes, boating, etc. For camping trips, we always take jumbo Yahtzee, Karma, and Rook, and I'll usually throw several others in the pile and sometimes buy a couple new ones. We have a lot because games are our fave go-to family activity. My kids are 18-23 now, and for many years we've bought a new board game one each person's birthday. We only recently stopped doing that every time because we are running out of space. We also have played lots of DnD as a family, though it's been few and far between now that they are older and are busier.

Some of the kids' recent favorites are Killer Bunnies, Unstable Unicorns, Clue, Karma...

I agree - games are the best family activity! Along with camping trips, game nights are definitely family memories that I'll cherish. I don't have a system like you do - that app sounds really cool though!! We just randomly choose what to play, and sometimes it's hard to pick.

We found when we chose randomly, we kept choosing the same games over and over again -- often times, yes, because we loved those games, but sometimes because we forgot about others. We have more shelves to hold games in this house, so the organization is a lot better...but sometimes we still mention a game we haven't played in a while and someone else will comment "I forgot about that one!"

I totally need another game night soon, talking about all of this! :agree

That's a great point, and that happens to us all the time. We always find games we totally forgot we had. I'm going to look into this app...

We just got done with a super busy month with some of us being on trips, so we haven't had a game night in quite a while.
