well as you all know finlay my 8 year old had a fear of the dentist and still has it deep down, yesterdy he was crying saying he had an ulcer and when i looked it was his abcess that the dentist is aware of thats causing the pain poor lad,the dentist was waiting for nature to run its course as its a baby tooth that needs to come out but looks like thats not going to happen fast enough now,so we have been to see the dentist today and have antibiotics to ease the infection then have to go back monday for a follow up to see the next course of action i have sort of talked him into having it out (well bribed him) we will have to see what monday brings but they have told me they can sedate him if they need to save him getting distressed

Poor kid. :( I hope they end up not having to pull it; but if they do, the sedation should help a lot. My son had dental issues when he was younger. Connor would get himself SO worked up before going that by the time we got there for his appointment he'd be a nervous wreck. The dentist would give Connor nitrous oxide and it really did help him relax.

I had an abscessed tooth a few months ago and it sucked, so I know how awful Finlay must feel right now. I hope the antibiotic has started working so he can get some relief from the pain.

Aw, poor kiddo. Hope the follow up goes well. :heythere

DD is a major worrier and worked herself into such a state before her last filling that she even freaked out when they went to do the nitrous oxide and refused the mask. We were about to give up and reschedule her with a sedative before the next appointment. When she found that out, she was so disappointed at the thought of another day of worry, that she was able to force herself to be brave enough to do the nitrous. Once they got into it, she was totally fine, even said how much she loooooooooooved cavities. :giggle Of course, she wasn't quite as happy about the whole thing once the nitrous wore off. :p I think next time we will do the pre-appointment sedation.

Oh, I hope he feels better soon and handles seeing the dentist ok. I'm thinking about him!

That's awful;, so hard when they are inpain and anxious about the thing that will fix it as well... (I sympathise, I still have a thing about dentists). Hope it all calms down soon - sedation can be good!

is nitrous oxide the happy gas? they tried this last time to do a filling but he couldnt breathe through his nose to inhale it so in the end they managed to get him to relax enough to be brave, the anti biotic has kicked in and im trying my hardest to get him to be just brave and have it done with just the numbing injection because for him to be sedated its another wait for a referral but i know where he is coming from because im scared of the dentist too but not to the extent he is

aww poor little fella, it took me a long time to get over my fear of the dentist and I still hate going! Hope you get it figured out and he's pain free soon

Yes, nitrous is the happy gas. :) It's a shame it didn't work for him. I can understand, though, how it could be scary to have the mask over your face and not be able to breathe through your nose. I'll be thinking about you (and Finlay). That's definitely a challenging parenting situation. I'm glad the antibiotic is working!

Awwww, so sorry!
The good news is with baby teeth, they tend to come out SO easily. The dentist does a bit of rocking back and forth and "pluck"...
Hopefully it will be as easy as that.

Oh no, poor little guy! Hope you guys get it settled quickly and without much more pain or struggles!!

Poor guy! My oldest also has a problem with the dentist. He has had to get one filling thus far and the dentist actually recommended that we sedate him beforehand. I can't remember what he prescribed as a sedative, but it wasn't nitrous oxide. It was a sedative I had to get myself from the pharmacy - a pink liquid that had to be refrigerated. We gave it to him there an hour before his procedure. He didn't fall asleep but he was out of it enough that he didn't complain.

That sounds like a good idea, ill see what monday brings the dentist may decide to leave it a bit longer
