I'm flying to London, UK in a few weeks for my honeymoon and I'm a little nervous about the food situation. I have a lot of sensitivities and eat a weird diet so it's always hard to travel.
Do you know of any grocery store chains that would sell gluten/dairy/egg/sugar/nut-free products? Do regular Tesco's have a good selection of that kind of stuff or do I need to seek out special stores? If so - got any names for me to look up? So far the only one I've been able to find through googling is Whole Foods but I'm sure there must be others?
I am just on my way out and will be back later but Holland and Barrett is a big, nationwide health food shop that should have a LOT of the things you need!
I have absolutely no help for you, Michelle, but just wanted to pop in to say (a) CONGRATS! and (b) I feel your pain. I feel like it's already a PITA to research restaurants, educate friends and family, etc. here in our own space and country. Traveling internationally with DH's gluten allergy would definitely set me on edge. I hope you're able to find everything you need there.
Talking to gluten-free friends I know they say that over here we are years behind other countries in catering for alternative diets. BUT having said that, London is probably the easiest place in the whole country to eat gluten (or dairy, nut, egg etc) free! You could always ask the concierge at the hotel for restaurant recommendations, Cranks is the only one I can think of but I am sure there are lots of others (it has been a long time since I ate out in London! )
I went to London in 2005 with my family and that's where we had stayed and we LOVED it! It's so handy to have that kitchenette, and the location is so central it's perfect. My bf has never been out there though so I'm very excited to show him around and see all the things I missed out on the first time around.
I've been doing a lot of restaurant research and there are a few places that have items on their menu labelled as gluten-free. Thankfully most places have their menus online which is really handy. I'm lucky that I'm not celiac, just sensitive so I avoid gluten and wheat more as a precaution. The ones I'm really allergic to are egg, dairy, fish and sugar and those are slightly easier to avoid. When I eat out I usually order a rotisserie chicken breast and take the skin off, or a steak with no sauce on it, or even a burger patty without the bun, etc. I just won't eat any meat that's breaded or fried. I've already had some luck finding a few places with things on the menu I should (in theory) be ok eating. Kate - have you ever heard of Garfunkels? They have a salad bar and everything so I'll be in heaven! lol
You know what I'm most excited about? Getting to order a "jacket potato" LOL! Reading these British menus is so fun. Kate I may need you to draw me a doodle of a potato wearing a jacket
Oooh Garfunkels - YUM!!!! And I can doodle you a potato in a jacket, no problem! If you need a guide to British slang and have no idea what someone is saying to you, I am only a text message away!
That is a super location! There's so much you can do from there on foot (I HATE the tube!) What's on your "must-do" list? Have you been to the Tate galleries?
