So... what kind of tv do you have?

We just bought a new 4K UHD tv yesterday because Target had them for a screaming deal and we needed one for the office. We had the old flat screen, from shortly after they first came out. It was super heavy and bulky with a frame that was several inches wide, and it had a wide band of strangeness going through horizontally. :giggle

Anyway, we bought the 4K UHD and it is so weird. I'm having a hard time getting used to it. The picture is so clear and different that it almost doesn't look like it is tv. I don't know what you call it, but it kind of reminds me of soap operas and how they always had a different look than regular tv shows. This tv is like you are watching a stage play or are right there as they are filming. I can't even imagine what the curved screens would be like.

I've read things that say technology is advancing so rapidly, in a few years, you won't be able to tell if a video game is real or fake. Just crazy.

What about you? Anything technologically related that you've been noticing? Anyone have virtual reality goggles or super-advanced toys? Anything you have your eye on?

I agree! We have a TV like this, and it looks like films were recorded on a camcorder. When we first got the TV ( its huge) I had a hard time looking at it for too long. Id get dizzy and my eyes hurt!

I know EXACTLY what you mean. My father in law has one of those TVs and every time I see it I think how weird it looks! Yes - like a soap opera!

Our friends have a tv like that. It's so strange. It's like it's 3D but things don't jump out at you. I always feel like I should be able to reach the screen and touch whatever is on there.

We have a projector + big screen instead of a TV, and honestly we don't watch it very much! It comes on for the occasional movie night, but that's about it. It's 10 years old now and not super HD or anything (it's either 720 or 1080p), so no weird visual effects here. I think that there are various settings in HD TVs that you can change to remove the "soap opera effect," but those settings will be different for each brand and model.

I love some new technologies and am "meh" about others. New iPhone or iPad? I'm all about that. VR, not so much. Most video games make me fairly sick to play (like, I want to hurl levels of sick if I venture away from anything but Lego games or Wii bowling), and I don't even want to know what VR would do to me!

We have one of those TV's - we got it as an open box return at Best Buy a year ago. It took a little bit to get used to, but now I love it! And there are some games DH plays that I'm not sure if it's a video game or a movie he's watching. It cracks me up.

I keep considering hooking my computer up to it and scrapping on it. :giggle

My hubbys wants to get a new TV next week if we can find a really good deal. Our TV in the basement rec room broke last year and that's where we usually watch movies. I don't think we want a 4k... just a regular ole LED.

We dont' have any VR in our house, but everyone definitely loves their apples devices. My boys have mini iPads that they saved up for several years ago and they use those things all the time. My hubby and I both hit our 20th anniversary at our current jobs this year (same company) and our reward is a brand new iPad. I can't wait! I bought the original iPad in 2009 and haven't upgraded since. That thing isn't even usable anymore, so I can't wait to have a new one again!

My parents have one and it the biggest TV I have ever seen. It feels like I am in almost in the scene sometimes. And I do get a headache from watching it too long. Probably bc I am just not used to it.

My kids do talk about those VR googles. I got them little cheap ones to put int their stockings last last year just for fun. But they don't use them much.

I'm ashamed to admit I have the fancy iPad Pro and pencil but don't use it except to go online. It's on my list of things to learn : I have Adobe CC and need to spend some time playing with all the apps & start using this thing more.

@jenn macabre 2018 will be year of learning. The iPad Pro and CC. My brain may explode...

DH got me a tv for my 60th? or 65th? birthday and it is getting out of date but I don't really want a new one as I'm the only one who watches and I am not a gamer. I do have to start watching some things on the iPad rather than the 40" tv because the clarity and color are better on the iPad!! Unbelievable.

Yep, we experienced that too when we first got our 4K TV last spring. It was right around the time the new season of GOT started and we were just stuck like glue staring at the almost 3D look on the big screen. My hubs had wanted this kind of TV and I resisted, thinking the cheaper ones were just as good, for the same size, and I have to say, he was right. It is worth the extra money. It is awesome....but does take a little getting used to.

Can't think of any new techie stuff I want but then again, I haven't really been looking. I was pretty happy this year when we upgraded our PVR and now can record 6 things at one. So much better than the 3x recording we had before. We never have to watch a show anymore with commercials, we PVR everything and watch at our leisure.

so are we skipping 2017? :giggle

I've never seen one of these. I'll have to go to a store just to look at the effects. Sounds really interesting.
We have an early standard flat screen TV purchased cheaply about 5 years ago. It is all we need as we only look at a few hours TV a week at most.

My hubby wants a new TV soooo badly! I really don't feel like it's necessary, but I'm sure we'll end up getting one. He wants a 55 incher. LOL I'm sure that whatever he gets will be the best of the best. He's like that when he finally gets something.

We're currently shopping around for one of these 4K TVs. Does anyone recommend a particular brand?

Our old plasma TV is just about toast. The black is looking a little greenish these days

Mines a Samsung.

Thanks Courtney, I think we're going with either Samsung or LG. There's some really good pre-black Friday deals out there right now.

My mom visited earlier this month and she was sitting on my sofa just staring at the TV screen while we watched some show. I mean, yeah, of course she should be looking at the tv lol but she was STARING, almost like she was mad. She finally turned to me and said "your TV is so CLEAR! LOOK AT IT!" [as if it hadn't been on my wall for a few months and she was showing it to me lol.] Anyway, I said "Yes, I told you we got a new TV. We got the new 4K UHD. Your TV [my brother gave our parents his "old" TV cuz he wanted a bigger one] is an HD TV, but you don't get HD channels cuz Dad doesn't want to pay the extra charge per month. Your TV could be like this!" So I hope my mom went home and made my dad sign up for HD channels. :)
Anyway, I do agree that it took some getting used to. (My mom seemed to love it right away, but I played with the settings a bit. Maybe it helped lol.)
And I don't like the curved TVs when I see them in the store. IDK why. Maybe it's cuz I sit to the side a bit when we all crowd around to watch TV, so I feel like I'd miss something cuz I'm not front-and-center? Like, how can I see the screen better if the picture is distorted from the curve?
And @janedee mine is also a Samsung. Our last 3 TVs have been Samsung, actually. (All 3 still work, though the oldest--it's about 8 or 9 yrs old--is on its last legs. That thing has been moved cross-country twice so I'm impressed!)

I've seen the soap opera effect ever since the HD screens started coming out several years ago. It really bothered me at first, but I guess I'm used to it now. On standard HD anyway. The ultra HD/4k/whatever the latest thing is still look super freakishly clear. Our current tv is a tiny old flat screen, but my parents are upgrading us as a Christmas present. They've got a huge 55 inch something or other that's about 5 feet away from the couch. Whenever I watch stuff at their house, it feels huge. We can't even read the Netflix description on our tv from across the room so whatever they get for us is going to be super nice!
