I need a new tripod - I'm really not looking for anything uber-expensive, maybe $50-75. Suggestions?

What kind of camera do you use? There aren't many (any??) I'd recommend in that price range for a dSLR and good lens. They just wouldn't be strong enough for me to risk putting expensive gear on.

I have a Manfrotto ball head and legs (purchased separately to make a system) but it was around $300.

that's what I was afraid of - it's a Nikon D7000, so it's fairly heavy.

I need this too! I have a Nikon D3300 with just the kit, but I'm torn between saving up for a tripod or a faster lens. I'm shooting 90% toddlers indoors, so the fast lens is probably best for me, but a tripod is next on my list. I didn't realize that when I graduated to DSLR I was falling down the rabbit hole of photography gear. Luckily, we live on a pretty tight budget so I'm pretty good at learning to master what I have before I move on.

But a tripod seems like a pretty essential next step besides lenses.

So... I am NOT a professional at all, but I have two different tripods. I bought one a long time ago at Walmart for $20. Then when I got a DSLR I thought I better get a new tripod that is sturdier and will hold my camera more still so I'll get fabulous photos. So my husband bought me a Manfrotto last year for my birthday and I really still prefer my old cheap one from Walmart. It's easier to get the little plate on and off the tripod and is lighter and I don't worry about it when I go to the beach with it getting ruined.

tripods and lilypads ... not the best combo ... Bart is just looking for someone to maybe take his picture? Or a kiss ... yes, a kiss would work!

Not sure if you are still in the market, but Costco has one in stores right now that retails for $200 on the B&H site, but at Costco has an instant rebate on it so the price is only $120. I know it's more than what you were planning, but it gets great reviews. I just picked one up this morning as it is a travel-sized one, so lighter weight, but rated to hold up to 8.8 pounds.

Reviving this discussion because I have a question about the Manfrotto tripod! Is this the kind of tripod that can bend to take overhead photos & videos. I'm thinking of the scrapbooking process videos, where you get an overhead view of someone putting together a layout or going through pages of a mini-album.

Great info in this thread!

You should be able to do this with most tripods Melanie. I have a Benro carbon tripod which I've had for years and it is still going strong. It even sits in salt water and sand a lot as I take photos at the beach. It has a ball head which I find easy to manipulate. It is used at least once a week.

My Manfrotto lets you take the center post out and mount it upside down. I wanted that for take macro pictures of snowflakes and stuff like that. But it should work for videos too! :)
