Ok, so my laptop has just become so bogged down with all my scrappy stuff I've decided to move it all over to a portable EHD. It should be easy enough...
But my database! I'm a crazy organizer/tagger and rely heavily on ACDSee to find what I need when scrapping. I should be able to move my whole stash AND database over to the EHD while still keeping it intact, right? I've googled it and found step by step instructions, but I'm nervous. I'm so worried it won't transfer right, or that the database will transfer but that the files will no longer be connected kwim?

Have any of you ever transferred your stash AND your database to another EHD or computer? Any tips or tricks I should know?

I've never done this, but from what I understand you just have to do everything within ACDSee and it should keep the tags.

My dh moved my tags from one computer to another, but it seems like it wasn't easy. Idk.

That is why I have never tagged my stuff even though I have the software - LOL! I am afraid if I get it all organized and have to change computers I will have to start all over! Let us know how it comes out.

My old EHD died and I got a new one about 6 months ago. I backed up the database. When I tried to restore it from the backup, I got errors but then it asked if I wanted to attach the database to a new drive. When I answered yes, it worked like a charm. So do expect some kind of message asking if you want to move/reattach/rename to a new drive.

Make sure you backup the database so you can go back if you need to.

Thanks Stacia. I've never backed up my database. So where was your backup located? You just did a restore of your backup on the new drive?

I've done it and it worked perfectly. Are you following the tut for rebinding? Let me know if you need help.

Good luck! I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people who've managed to do it successfully.

I use Lightroom not ACDSee, so my tags are on the file's metadata (as opposed to a database). When I transferred my catalog to my current lappie I only had to link parent folders and all my tags, etc came through :)

Make sure you have your data embedded before you move everything. (tools--->embed database). Several years ago I was able to recreate my database by re-cataloging my files. ACDSee pulled the catagories embedded in the files back into the program after I changed computers.

I keep my backups on the same ehd as the supplies, but just to be safe I did one to my c drive too. The one on the ehd worked fine for me.
