Remind me? Is that specifically a UK thing? Or is it more European countries? And when you don't pay it does your tv just stop working?
We have a fee in Denmark as well. The TV does not stop working. It's kind of an "on your honor" thing, although if you don't pay, they may come by and see if you have a TV. I don't know if the UK one is the same, but the one here is for any of DR's services, which also includes radio and going to their website. I have a friend who is periodically harassed for not paying, and he doesn't have a TV, never listens to the radio, etc. and he has to argue with them about it every time. It's ridiculous, IMO.
I didn't know there was any other country...I am surprised to hear, as I always kept moaning about how - as you well put it,
@lorryfach , the TV license is and how this was the only country in the world that has one....!
In this country, it is supposed to be fundings for the BBC, and if you don't pay, they not just may come to see if you have a TV... there is a fine of (last time I looked which was over 10 years ago) £1000.
Not only that, but there was a time I was an interpreter for many of the governments services, including courts of law, Metropolitan Police and Customs & Excise, and I have been many, many times to prisons to work where the person IN JAIL was there for not paying the TV license. Many were women, and I remember once it was an Ecuadorian lady who hardly spoke any English, and she was an Asylum Seeker.
Whether the assylum seeker status is debatable, the idea of putting a person in jail because of the payment of the TV license is beyond ridiculous, this woman also had a small baby.
So: no license? can't pay the fine? is prison for us.
We hardly EVER watch the BBC, now that we don't watch Dr Who anymore, but the law says if you have a TV in your house, even if you can prove you don't watch any TV (some people used it for videos long time ago) the fine applies anyway.
Things get even more annoying when you hear they pay Johnathan Ross (whom I kind of enjoy watching, but anyway) a staggering £18 million for a 3 year contract for a weekly show.....
I also just got an email from Sky telling us that they are putting up the prices... great way to start the day!
