Tips for head shots?

Okay, all you photographers out there... I am in desperate need for a new head shot for business cards and other marketing. i tend to either love or hate photos of me. there are none that are just ok. The one i have now, i hate. My face looks like i stuffed it with water balloons or something, and i look about 10 years older than i am. wth?

any tips for taking a good headshot? maybe it's just about the wardrobe or the hair? i have no idea. but i definitely want to get it right this next time around.

After reading through these, I feel like the angles were where my first headshot went all wrong. I seriously felt like I was getting an elementary school picture taken. I really photography much better from an angle slightly above me, rather than straight on. When I get my retake done, I'll definitely have to make a point of that.
