Yep, I woke up this morning to my family moaning and groaning about no WiFi. Seriously, my teen DD can't get ready for school without streaming something and I'll take away her phone if she uses all our data.... bwhahaha

I ran downstairs to the basement and rebooted the router and all is well for now, but seriously I think I'm gonna have to buy a new router. Our internet has been dropping a lot lately and even after updating the firmware, we're not getting good speeds. Oh the joys of being the only techy in the family.

So my question for today is do the three words, "There's no WiFi" strike fear, panic and chaos at your house too?
 
Yes. DH often works from home, so this means he needs to go to the office. We happen to have an unlimited data plan, so at least we have internet connection with our devices.
 
oh gosh.. I would be having a hissey fit as our house phone, wifi and tv are all in one so if it went out we woudn't have computer or tv (phone is no biggy lol).. glad you could reboot!

We have Fios as well (and I have verizon stock :) ) ANyway I yell for my hubby to fix too and he usually can without contacting FIOS/Verizon!

I wish we had a Peter instead of just a Mom. Sometimes, I feel like MOM is a 4 letter word. Especially, when I'm trying to sleep and they're saying it. :giggle
 
DH, DS, and I are all hardwired, so WiFi itself is only a minor inconvenience, but the whole of internet access being out does present a problem, especially since the kids often have to do schoolwork online and DH often works from home. Fortunately, it's pretty reliable most of the time.

We also have Fios (originally Verizon, bought out by Frontier in this area) and did have a lot of problems for a bit last fall. They finally sent someone out who ended up replacing the entire big unit in our garage. Apparently it was ancient by Fios standards :P but had held up well due to its protected installation location. I guess a lot of them are installed outdoors and don't fare as well.
 
No panic here as I am the only one who uses the computer. My husband does not even know how to turn it on and says he hopes he never need to learn how to. He asked me recently to one day to show him how to use the laptop.
 
I wonder how loud I'd need to yell so Peter could hear me??? @jk703 Actually this reminds me that when Dick gets back from Florida, I want him to SHOW me how to reboot the router. One is in his office back in a corner and the newer 5G one is in the living room. I've yet to understand how and why we use two. I don't love having the one in the living room but we don't get many dropped calls anymore so...

Our modem/router combo is from Mediacom, and usually there's never an issue with the router itself. The problem will be with Mediacom and there will be an outage in our area. I'm hard wired in, and every time we've lost wifi, I've also lost connection BUT I still hear the "Mama, the internet's out!" LOL

I reboot the modem/router before I call Mediacom . . . and that's when I hear "there's been an outage reported in your area" and either a time for reconnection (or not). We don't have unlimited data with our phone plan (Verizon), so we just have to wait. We will usually watch digital antennae TV or nothing at all. I will scrap or do other things on my computer that don't require internet connection. Daniel has a different phone plan than the rest of us with a very limited data range, so he's use to downloading what he needs when he's home with wifi, so he can listen to music that's downloaded to his phone or games or whatever. :)

It is so strange how things have changed in the past 10 years . . . how reliant we all are on the internet . . . fascinating really.
 
Try having your internet go out about noon on a Saturday of Super Bowl weekend. Thinking it was the modem, rebooted it several times and no internet. And, it is print sale weekend at Persnickety Prints which ends at midnight on Sunday night... it was not easy to get those print credits ordered using my phone. Thankfully I still had cable and could actually watch the Super Bowl the next day.

Got a new modem on Monday. Worked great for 4 days. Went out on noon on Friday. Luckily my cable/internet company is local and I was able to get service that day since I complained about not going another weekend without internet! Turns out my internet line coming off the pole had a hole in it from squirrels chewing on it. It had been icy then warmed up. When the ice melted... boom. Internet out. Once the new line was run no more issues (unless I run my Backblaze backup continuously... my internet drops during it).
 
Ours has dropped several times here recently, so we are thinking it's about time for a new router. If DS is in his room when it goes out, he will call me from his phone..."Moooooommmmm! Fix the internet!!" We have unlimited data on our phones, but he's all about the PS4 and PC.

In my house it goes:

"Courtney!! Why isn't it working? I tried resetting the router." Of course, I also get:
"Hey babe! Why is my game so slow? Is there something wrong with the internet? Should I reset the router?"

I love that the only thing he remembers is how to reset (aka powercycle) the router.
 
We have been having issues with our router for the last several months too. In the evening around 8 or 9 pm when EVERYONE in the area is online, our speeds were dropping dramatically. My hubby or the kids would restart the router and it would be fine again. So my hubby was actually reading up on this since our router is only 2 years old and should NOT need to be replaced yet... he read about how during high volume use periods, that routers can get hot and they go into self-preservation mode and slow themselves down or something. Anyway, he found a fan platform thingie that sits on the shelf under the router and points the fan at the bottom of the router and keeps it cool. Our speeds went through the roof fast after that. So weird, but it really seems to work. It was only $22 or something like that too! That was WAY better than having to fork over a lot more than that for a new router!
 
wi fi not so much ,annoying but not the end of the world.But internet connection, that is a problem.... tv is iptv ,Netflix ( sometimes ) or The Danish state tv catch up via internet. We use whats app a lot,and my hubby reads the newspaper on line, plus scrapping forums, challenges and what ever else we are into, so more than a shout could be heard from here if that went.
 
We have load shedding here every so often with rolling power blackouts for 2 hours at a time. WHen this happens I miss the wifi most of all.
Over the weekend we stayed with people that had a uninterrupted power supply and their wifi stayed on during the load shedding.
It was life changing.
Now a UPS is on my "most wanted" list.
Pretty please?

That's a great idea, thanks for sharing! I'm gonna see if amazon has one and give it a try.
