Can really put a dent in ones half marathon training... :(

So some of you may know that I'm somewhat of a runner. I ran my first 10km race in June and felt so happy with my finish that I decided to sign up for a half marathon race (21km) in Montreal in September. I even got my mom roped into the whole thing. Well, about 4 weeks ago, I started getting numbness in my left leg and figured it might just be the new shoes so switched back to the kind I like but the numbness wouldn't go away. I then decided to visit the physiotherapist at my local running store. They specialize in runners. She told me it was a tight piriformus muscle (just below my butt cheek) and it was pulling on my sciatic joint and causing sciatica. She gave me stretches to do and told me NO RUNNING! I kind of had a panic attack but figured for one week it would be ok. Now we're three weeks later and I haven't ran since. I'm feeling so frustrated that I probably won't make it to the race since I haven't trained at all because I haven't been allowed to. I feel like it's such a cop out because I feel fine except for the numbness. It's so very frustraing because all I want is to get out there but I know that in the long I will cause myself permanent damage... grrrr.... anyhow, just wanted to share what was happening with me.

On the bright side I've been able to really take advantage of my summer despite still working... ;)

Aw, I'm so sorry! It's totally NOT a cop out, though. Permanent damage is bad news, you know. ; ) Will it go away or is it the kind of thing you're always gonna have?

Thanks Kellie! It should go away if I take care of it and do the proper stretches but I have to get better first before I can do any kind of activity... :(

Oh, what a bummer! :( But better be safe and wait it out until you're completely healed!

renee, i'm so sorry girl! that stinks! i know how hard it is to be restricted from something you love to do. :(

How frustrating Renee! It's good that you are listening to your body and taking care of it. Hopefully you will be back in running form soon. Maybe you can find another half marathon in the late fall that you can train for?

My husband missed out on his chance to run the Boston marathon this Spring because of a pulled muscle in his hip. He was so disappointed. They lowered the qualifying times so it will be a lot harder for him to qualify again. After lots of physical therapy, they determined that it was his back where this all started and he is really religious about stretching well now. He didn't run for four full months earlier this year but now he is back in great running form. He is doing a half marathon next week.

So don't feel like a cop out and wait until you're ready to go. Your health is most important. You will get the fitness back.

I feel like I'm their spokesperson now, but I've only done it twice and noticed results! Something you might want to look into ;) www.meltmethod.com I have been a runner for years and just had to stop a couple months ago b/c my knees couldn't handle it anymore. I couldn't even get out of bed and walk down my stairs in the morning properly. It would KILL! My doctor told me tendonitis and that I had to strengthen the muscles in my quads to help support my knees... Well, that didn't help. So I just stopped running.

I recently moved back to Florida and started back at the fitness center that I used to go to while living here. The owner asked me if I was going to get back into running with the group and I said probably not, b/c of my knees. She asked me if I had ever heard of M.E.L.T. I told her no, so she went into great detail about it and showed me how to do it. Basically it's using these balls to touch certain pressure points in your feet that open up the pathways to allow fluid to run throughout your body and HYDRATE connective tissue (while drinking water). Let me just tell you it's given amazing results to me... No more aching in my knees :) I'm going to try and get back into the running next week once I've done the MELT a few more sessions. It only takes about 7 min. a day.

I am so sorry that you can't run right now. I know that is super frustrating. I ran 3 half marathons then hurt my lower back & couldn't run for 6 months. It was really hard. I hope you can get all the stretching in so you will be running again soon. Are there any other half marathons coming up that you could jump back into training for when you are ready?

Oh wow! Brandi, that MELT method looks like it would work! Please let me know if you try running and how you feel!

Thanks everyone for your well wishes! It really means a lot!

I will definitely let you know! I figured I'd try it b/c what do I have to lose? My knees are starting to feel back to normal and I've been doing the MELTing since Tuesday!
