from PSE7 to photoshop... which version would be the best? For the ones who went from PSE to CS, did you regret it? How much do you love it?

Apparently there are plug ins for PSE that give you the PS features which you may want to think about before upgrading. But otherwise I say go for it! There will be a big adjustment as the 2 programs are very different but it will be worth it. I actualy don't use either...I am stuck with old and crappy PS7, but I have played with PSE6 and CS3 so I know what they are like :)

I always think if you're going to make the leap, that it's best to go with the most recent version. A nice thing about CS4 is that it operates more efficiently than its predecessors, so it's much less of a drain on your computer's resources.

I've never used PSE, just PS. I upgraded to CS4 a while back, and I love it. I know some PS users got frustrated with it and went back to their old versions, but I never looked back. There were a couple things that took getting used to, or that required some tweaking to my preferences, but it wasn't a big deal.

i went from pse 5.0 to cs3.

to tell you truthfully i still have both programs on my computer. why? cuz i've never figured out how to successfully do 'red eye' on psc3 and pse has a magic little button. :beat

anyway. i love using psc3. i spent about 2-3 weeks banging my head against the screen, crying, throwing tantrums and asking alot of questions here in the forum because there are ALOT of differences...however, i won't go back. what i can do with shadows has revolutionized my scrapping.

the big thing you will have to get over is that there is no bucket or tray in cs3. you know that thingey on the bottom of the work space where you can clearly see everything you have open? not there. i've gotten used to working around that but i miss it and would love it if they ever considered putting back. i know alot of scrappers who won't leave pse just for that one thing.

you can d/l a trial version. i suggest doing that when you have 30 days to really dig into it - cuz the learning curve thing.

I made the jump a while back from pse6 to cs3 and while it was a bit difficult at first, I am happier. I can use so many more actions and the warp tool is so nice. Now I have cs4. I agree with Joan that it is best to go with the most recent one.

I literally just upgraded from PSE 5 to CS4 last week...I am where Lauren was...banging my head & crying. I was happy with my PSE but I have to learn CS for school. I have done 1 layout in it....it took me FOREVER!! I have just been opening it up and playing with different features like text on a path (love it) to get used to it. The options that you have on your layers styles are pretty cool & all the actions that you can buy or find are awesome. It's kinda nice seeing an action online & not being bummed when you see it won't work in PSE. I still have PSE on my computer and probably always will though.

I got an awesome deal on it through my school but I have heard that there are supposed to be some killer black friday deals as well.

what Lauren said :lol I went from PSE7 to CS4 a couple months ago. To be honest, I thought I would like it more than I do. I miss some of the more automated commands in PSE and I definitely miss the photo bucket and the organizer. I do not like Bridge that comes with CS4. The shadows are nice and the ability to use actions and do more stuff with type but I'm not sure if I would switch again if I had the chance.

when I upgraded, I took some basic online courses on how to use CS4 and really, as much as I loved PSE it now it just seems so limited. I can customize just about every step I take with any tool to my liking - love my adjustments! I play with all the bells and whistles all the time, just to see what they can do. If I don't like it "step back" and try again!
I also love adobe bridge...

I love it and I took PSE off of my pc - never thought I would (security blanket of sorts) - CS4 has a button for red eye btw!

Where?!?!? I haven't been able to find it yet and I took a bunch of pictures of my kids the other day and they look like devil children...I really need to fix them.

ALT click the healing brush
it has spot healing , patch tool, healing brush and red eye removal...

Pssst...if you right click on the thing that looks like a band-aid (or click on the tiny arrow of the corner of the band-aid) a little menu pops up and one of the choices is the red-eye tool. All you do is click on the eye and it fixes it :agree

I went from PSE6 to CS3. In the beginning I was very very sad about the lack of the photo bin. But now I'm quite used to not having it. I just ctrl-tab through all the windows. I like CS3 much better, feel like I have more freedom with it. I did stop scrapping for many months though and feel like I have forgotten so much :cry. I switched for the warp tool and paths. Installing actions is so much easier too. Just drop them in, ahh. It's also really nice to be able to group layers.

Can you be more specific? I'm just curious because I have CS2 and DH has offered to maybe upgrade me to CS3 or CS4. I didn't know which one would be better, but I remember reading somewhere about one thing that really made scrappers mad in CS4 and I can't remember what it was.

BTW for those of you that miss the photo bucket along the bottom edge of PSE, you should totally consider buying a cheapo $99 monitor and use two monitors at once. I know that sounds kind of crazy, but I started using it at work and within a couple of months I "had" to have one at home too. I have about 4 windows of file explorer open at a time and can view thumbnails from several kits at once. When I want to open something I just grab the thumbnail and drag it into PS. (you can drag from one screen to the other) Then you don't have to have as many files open in PS at a time and in theory it should run a bit faster. :)

I use CS4 and love it, I've never really tried PSE though. I tried to help a friend with her PSE for a long time and found it so frustrating because I just wanted things to work like they do in CS. LOL

I'd keep both and just dabble your way into being fluent in CS.

I do not, however, recommend the switch from CS3 to CS4 because I found it to be a frustrating move. But if I were going to pick one to start with fresh, I'd definitely go with the latest version.

Or try dl'ing GIMP. It's free and knocks the socks of PSE...

I know, I know - I'm an open-source bore!
