My dog Lucas died over the weekend. He was 13 years and 7 months old, and he had been in decline for several months, going deaf and blind with some other serious health issues.

But I guess we can say he had a pretty good run? We brought him home as a rescue pup when he was a mere 9 weeks old, and from the very first day he just attached himself to me, I was his substitute mother. He was loving and loyal and devoted, he was my best boy and my best friend.



I am utterly bereft and overcome with grief, and just a total wreck.
 
Truly, losing our dog a few years ago was one of the hardest things I've ever lived through. I am pretty sure I cried more for him than I did for some family members... not that I didn't love my family members, but dogs have a way of weaving them into the fabric of our days. They are part of our rhythm of life, and it feels off when they are missing. I'm so sorry for your loss. I know how much it hurts and how hard it is to adjst.
 
I'm so very sorry for your loss! They truly are part of the family! Losing my 11 year old Nelly (dog) a few years back and my 10 year old Jeffery (cat) last year was the worst. I miss them all the time. Sending you lots of love and hugs!!
 
I’m so sorry for your loss! My dog Murphy is 12 and slowing down and I dread the day he leaves us. It sounds like Lucas had a wonderful life full of love!
 
I'm very very sorry for your loss. I know too well the feeling.

He was very lucky to have found you and your family and he was loved for the (always too short) time he was on this earth. Your beautiful page makes me smile with the journaling. That is how he should be remembered :beat

I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing a fur baby is terrible. They leave such big holes in the world.

I'm so sorry for your loss. He sounds like he was a wonderful dog and found an amazing home with you for all of those years. My bestie just lost her dog after 13 years and grieved hard for her too. She said the worst part was getting home and not having her great her at the door and then she'd cry all over again. I love your great tribute layout of him!
 
Oh goodness, I feel your pain.
Sorry for you loss seems really inadequate, but we can only empathize.

My golden retriever is 11 and I know her time is coming sooner rather than later. My Mom had her litter mate, and she passed completely unexpectedly last summer. We we're devastated. Sending you lots of love.

I'm so sorry for your loss of Lucas. Losing a furbaby is one of the hardest things to go through. They have a way of becoming such a big part of our lives.

I knew this day was coming, and I thought I was prepared for it...but I guess I wasn't prepared at all. I keep looking for him (going to the back door to let him in, going to the kitchen to replenish his water dish, expecting him to jump up beside me on the family room couch), only to realize, yet again, that he is no longer here. It reminds me of how, for several months after my mother died, I kept picking up the phone to call her...

It is very comforting to talk to people who understand that Lucas was a beloved family member, and not "just a dog" (as if any dog is "just" a dog! dogs are the loveliest and most loving creatures ever)
 
Big hugs. This is so hard & sadly anyone who loves animals share your pain! We are blessed to have them for such short parts of our lives!
