The Horror!! A true tale...

I'm gonna keep my eye on this thread for sure. We just inherited *that* closet from my in-laws. Bah. We literally just started going through boxes in the last couple of weeks. There is no rhyme or reason anywhere. Just boxes and boxes and boxes of photos, slides and negatives. There are no dates, names, etc. We also have family letters (from the 30s-40s through the 90s) and other ephemera. It is crazy. I'm going to steal some of these ideas. :) We made it through a partial box of the newest stuff and sorted into piles for DH and his brother and a throw-away pile. I refuse to throw away the pictures from the 30s-40s... but the random poorly-taken pictures of their flowerbed from 2003 can go.

We've been looking into having everything scanned, but it may be cost-prohibitive. We may just sort and then scan the most important stuff because at least then we'd have digital and could distribute things easier.

Keep us posted on how you are doing!!!!

Ooooh my...Laura I don't even have words right at this moment. {{hugs}}

Well they'll be better off now that you've tackled them. It's for the best, really.

My childhood photos are dated and stored in albums, although my Mom has started to transfer photos over to pretty scrapbooks. :)

I love all the advice here, Laura. It's such a gift what you're doing with these photos. Hopefully as you're going along you'll find some real gems that will make all the work worthwhile. Just think of how wonderful it will be when you're done with each goal! A few years ago, I went through major piles of clothes and other items in my parents' bedroom. I took "before" and "during" photos as I went along. It was one of the hardest things I'd ever done but those "after" photos were so satisfying! In fact, sometimes when I need to tackle something big I go back and look at the before and after photos to inspire me. You can do it!!

Thanks for all of the great advice. I'm working steadily (though I had a few days of doing nothing since Julia has had the stomach flu) and sorting roughly by decade and major events. I will definitely have to come back and refine, but that's OK....it's a good start. I've already started a pile of photos I want to scan so that my brothers can have copies as well. Ahhhh the memories! :)

sorry to hear about the sickies but happy to hear that it has given you a bit of time. :D
on an unrelated note. are you available for hire? i would love to have someone do this with the boxes and slides i'm sure my family has. ;)
