I was looking back at old travel and event and summary layouts of my own, and I realised that many of my favourites used a blocked style, often with strips of colour as well.
So I created a new set that I have been having fun using myself. (Retrovista No.2 templates)
It's so simple - and satisfying - to look for dominant or 'popping' colours in your photos, then use tones of those for your background and accent strips.
For example, here I pulled the pink of the drying beach towel and paired it with the bright turquoise of the Tui's feathers. A very "toned down" version of that turquoise ie grey became the background.
For my May summary page, I drew on the amazing dawn sky of the beach where we swim every morning (keeping us sane in the chaos!). I contrasted it with the orange of the butterfly and of the sun glowing through the friend's yurt where we retreated to when the building work got too noisy.
But, of course, you can use patterned papers as well - like these great ones from @Rachel Jefferies "Sarda & Salt" kit which was perfect for my windy Greece photos:
