Right now, I usually ask one of the kids to gather up the trash and take it outside to the can and roll it out to the street. But since my two oldest kids are heading off to college and the can is bigger than my youngest, I guess the job of taking out the trash will fall to me when my hubby's gone on business. I'm usually the one to bring it back in from the street because I'm home during the day on trash days.

My DD is lucky. Her new college apartment has a trash valet service, so they just put their can outside their door and the trash is collected and disposed of for them. Easy Peasy!

How about at your house... who takes out the trash?

I will take the trash from the house & put it in the cart in the garage. My husband usually takes the cart to the curb and brings it back, but I do it sometimes.

When my hubby and I were courting I asked him for 2 things I never ever wanted to do.
Take out the garbage and put gas in the car.
The boys usually do the garbage. When I have done major decluttering, I help drag the big bags.
Gas, I hate it, and have had to on a very small amount. I seriously HATE that chore!

ooh - i like the sound of that trash valet thingy!!!

i just lost my trash boy too! and my dishwasher emptier. two little tasks that i never liked to do. and now i not only have to do them, but it makes me sad thinking of him being gone when i do them. double bummer! my daughter is so busy - i usually don't bother her with household stuff often.

10yr old & husband take out the trash. Here's the thing though, everyone will overfill the trash can. I am the only person who will bag up the trash. I am also the only person who will put a new bag in the trash can. It's insane! What happens is, it will be too full. I'll bag it up & put it in the hallway by the kitchen. That is the sign, as you are going out the door, take out the trash! Friggin' males!

If I am cleaning up the kitchen, I ask for the person closest to me at that time to take it to the can outside. So, if you don't want to do it, don't be in the kitchen with me. LOL!

My hubby takes the cans to the curb on pickup day since he leaves the house at 4am. Our neighbor usually brings them back up for us. Not really sure why she does but we don't question it. :giggle

Isn't that so frustrating?! Or, they will just let the bag slip away from the bin and still throw trash so when I go to pull the bag out it's got coffee grounds or some other crud all over the outside of the bag. UGH! Makes me wanna :box

Same here, Anne. I never have to put gas in my car unless I'm out of town by myself. My DH and now our DD (who lives with us) take out the trash and the recycling. They collect on two different days. They pick it up at the end of our driveway.

As we are just two people we barely fill one 13gal bag a week. In addition to our regular trash can, we also have a recycling bin so all paper, bottles, plastic go in there. I doubt we have a can of anything more often than once a month so we rarely fill our small rectangular recycling bin either. We also composte. Dick does all the trash gathering through the house in addition to the kitchen bag and takes it out to the curb Monday night. Ditto the recycling. Whoever is going out somewhere first usually brings the bins back to the backyard storage unit thingy. I park in the driveway (he parks on the street) so I usually try to avoid going out early Tuesday morning so I don't have to the return trip. :giggle

My husband helps in this department a lot, but he also travels frequently for work and so I have trash duty pretty often.

Yes, this!! So frustrating. DH will occasionally take the full bag out and set it in the kitchen floor to try to get more in it, but doesn't bother to put a new one in the can.

It's my 13 year old's job to take the bags from the house outside to the cans. Then we just kind of wing it on taking the cans to the curb...whoever is available to do it when we think about it on trash night. We have to get it up there at the end of the driveway the night before because they run so early in the morning.

We had this at one of our apartments. We put the trash bags out in front of the door, and they collected it.
I hated it. #1 they only came once a week, so I still had to walk to the dumpster in the summer because produce remains smell in less than a week! #2 they never collected recycling. So, I had to walk to the recycling dumpster. #3 it was expensive! especially considering I was doing so much work!

I hate this! It's horrible at my mom's house. In fact, when we visit, DH and I end up taking out the trash more than those that live there!

We also composte.
I was trying to figure out how you made it on a bag a week, since fresh food smells. Now I get it!

DH typically takes the trash and recycle can out. I sometimes help. Munchkin sometimes helps.
Bringing it back is usually munchkin and/or me.
From the house, DH usually does it. His nose is more sensitive than mine! I'd rather wait until the bag is full, but that rarely happens.

I have always been the one to pull the bag of trash out of the can. Our big curb bin usually has one 13gal bag and a bunch of doggie poop bags in it. Our trash bin is collected once a week and it is me that usually takes it out and brings it in. They pick up our recycling every other week - the big curb bin is always full. We compost our veggie scraps.

When the kids were young, I paid them 50 cents per bin per trip. So if they took it down but forgot to bring it up, they only got paid for one trip. Since the boys went to college, I just do it myself.

What I really, really miss is Sock Boy. Both sons had that role of sorting, folding, and putting away all the socks for the whole family from each week's laundry. Now I have to do it. DD is supposed to be doing underwear but I really have to nag her to do it. I also hate folding towels which is crazy since they are so easy to fold...

There's only 2 of us now, so whoever bags it up usually takes it out. If I'm cleaning up the kitchen after dinner, John will usually take it if I ask him to.

We also composte.

We really don't have the room for it, but I am seriously considering signing up for a composting pick up service.

^^ This.

We live in the city and have trash cans in the alley... I HATE taking out the trash because of rats. They just freak me out. I honestly haven't had many run-ins with them while taking out the trash, but I was outside in the alley once (the kids were all riding bikes) when our neighbor opened his trash can to find a whole family of rats... lots of screaming ensued and now I open our bin with caution. I also feel the need to scrub my hands after I come in.

I hate taking out the trash. That is DH's job, not that he happily took it on but I honestly don't care. :evillaugh But...now that we have 2 kittens and he's allergic, I scoop out their litter and take care of that. It gets bagged up and goes straight to the outside trash can. YUCK.

I literally just came in from hauling everything to the curb and sat down to this thread. I'm the bagger, hauler, recycler, etc. Everyone just leaves their bottles on the counter, and I run them out to the recycle bin. DH used to take it to the curb, but he left so early in the morning for work that by the time the garbage crew would come, the raccoons and crows would have already ripped apart the bags and scattered our trash everywhere. It was just easier for me to do it than to pick up ant infested garbage from our driveway. Eeew!

My boys are in charge of taking all the trash out to the outside bin and then my hubby will take it to the curb on the appropriate day. I of course take some trash out too if my boys aren't home or are busy, but mostly I don't have to do it much.
