Let me preface by saying that I love Apple products, and will never switch, but right now I am so steamed at them! They changed iPhoto to a new program Photos, and in doing so, along with their new iOS on the phones, changed the naming nomenclature. I went to do an update, and I pulled out my library and backed it up. I double-checked that it was there, and then did my OS update on my desktop. Somehow, when I went back to drag my photos back into the hard drive, all my photos from June to the end of August are GONE. And I mean GONE. I checked the backups. BOTH of them. I checked the trash because sometimes it will toss things in the trash but not empty it. Nope.

SOOOO - my dilemma is that I am using Just Jaimee's Ready to Go Templates and they are two pagers with anywhere from 10-14 pictures for each week. I don't have even HALF that amount of pictures. It will look funny to change templates for a few months, and then go back to the regular ones, but what do I fill it with?? I can't put my favorite scrap pages and memes for 3 months!

What would you do?

Cry. I'm so sad for you that you lost photos!! There's no way to retrieve them at all?!?!?

Could you fill in the photo spaces with places you go? Maybe your house hasn't changed that much, or your favorite restaurant? Or your car? Take a few photos now, that are the same as they were June- August and fill it in? Add the weather report for the week? I added a photo that my kid drew almost every week one year. And books we read, especially the picture ones we read over and over! The covers of those would fill in some spaces and no one would know when you took the photo! Same with music you are jamming to. Or screenshots from Silver Anniversary planning? Lists of "to-do's" cake, venue, invites, etc?

When I switched to Mac back in 2014, one of the things that drove me nuts was that I couldn’t figure out where iPhoto was storing my photos. So I ended up using Lightroom. I only just this past weekend learned where those photos were being stored and deleted the old iPhoto library.

Not sure if you are a phone camera user or other, but might you still have the photos in camera?

Always sad to lose photos..

These are some GREAT ideas!!! Thank you!!

i am a phone camera taker mostly. It’s a pain to get the big Dslr out!

I am switching to Lightroom, I think.

I'm so sorry to see that you've lost some photos. Are you talking about this year's photos? I had this happen to me once many years ago. I can't even remember what I did to lose them, but I ended up finding them in my icloud account because I looked in there before 30 days and they were auto-deleted. Did you already delete the photos off of your phone too?

Anyway, when this happened to me, I went through my texts from that time periods and was able to get some photos back that way and found some on Facebook. I also had some friends send me some too. Maybe your daughter has some pictures on her phone?

As far as continuing to use JJs templates, what if you fill some of the photo spots with fun papers, or mixed media clusters. I often use photo spots to add more journaling on those templates too. Then you could stick with the same templates at least to make them cohesive.

I do this all the time to fill in photos -- or look online for news stories that were happening that week. (And I sometimes find additional photos attached to texts that I never added to my photo folder, or I'll find some gems in my kids instagram accounts). Also, I know you said this is project 52, but I have to say that Tracie @tkradtke opened my mind to the idea a few years ago that I didn't need to be so rigid about the weekly format. I could still do chronological pocket pages while just letting the date ranges fall where they may based on the photos or event. I literally just did a layout this week that was from Oct 14-Oct 31 because that just made the most sense based on the photos I had. No one is going to go back and care that a layout covered 2 weeks instead of 1.

Sorry you've had this problem. I'm sitting here trying to get rid of photos from my phone and they keep popping back up in Google photos. I'm talking photos from 8 years ago that I already have backed up on my computer and EHD's. And I'm on my 3rd different phone since then! I have no need for them on this phone.

As for your layouts, I was also going to suggest journal in those areas, use journal cards or just fill them with fun papers. I think I would even journal about losing the photos to explain why these months don't have as many photos.

So sorry that has happened. UGH. That sucks,
I'm just here for moral support and hugs.
I think the ideas you've gotten are awesome though.

@Karen I did go to the iCloud and check and there is a big ole empty spot from June 1 (coincidently my birthday pictures... :( ) to August 25th. All the previous and all the latter are still there. It's totally a puzzlement!!

I'm so sorry you lost all of your photos! This is exactly why I have my photos auto-backing up different places. I'm so paranoid about losing mine. I've been auto backing up to Flickr and Google Photos since 2008 plus a couple of others. Yes, I do have to pay Flickr and I buy extra space for Goodle Photos, too.

Again, I'm so sorry for you losing yours. I don't know anything about the programs you're using, so I'm just here for support, too. :(

I tried Google photos after we talked the last time and it wasn't quite what I was looking for, and I don't really want to pay for a photo site. I might have to do that though. I backed up in 2 other places so I was sure it was fine. It seems so strange that it was a block of time, not just an upload or two that I forgot to save. SO WEIRD.

I never figured out iPhoto and have always transferred my photos to my computer using Image Capture. It allows me to organize photos the way I want to. It’s more like a basic file transfer than anything fancy and I’m fine with basic

I’m with @bestcee in regards to filler. I include all kinds of things if I don’t have photos… books I’ve read, movies or tv shows I’ve watched, news event, screenshot of text messages, etc.

(And I sometimes find additional photos attached to texts that I never added to my photo folder, or I'll find some gems in my kids instagram accounts).

YES!!! THIS^^ My daughter and I communicate through photos in texts. She’ll send me a pic from her apartment window and I’ll send her one back of the dog. You might find something in your text threads.

And as Dawn also said, don’t worry too much about one full spread per week. Whatever you capture and record is more than the average person documents. No one is going to miss anything, they’re just going to be thankful for what is there

OMG Tracy - you just solved my problem!!!!!!!! Image Capture doesn't rename the photos!!!!! It doesn't rank them by day and month, but I can do that myself. The naming thing was the kicker for me!!!

Thank you so much! This won't help for the past, but moving forward I will use image capture!!

YAY!!! That’s why I like it… I know where to find my stuff and what it’s called lol! It’s just part of my normal time capsule and backblaze back ups this way. I think there is the ability to arrange in date order. Once things are transferred, I open the folder in Finder and choose how I want the files arranged.

I’m sorry about your lost photos Susie. I’m missing a couple years from when my girls were babies so I feel your pain.

I’m glad you’ve found some great help with this thread!

Oh drat. Well, it was worth checking. It is so weird. I wonder what happened. Maybe somehow they will magically reappear someday. :(
