Ok, here's the deal. My boys want a dog so bad I think they have fur coming out of their ears. I really want to get one too but I really don't know which one is right for us. I think we are kinda sorta close to giving in so I wanted to get the opinions of you dog owning ladies. My boys are 4 and 6 and he/she will be an inside dog.

Any suggestions?

With a 4 and 6 year old, I would not got a small dog...at least medium size will hold up better to the "love" that little kids dish out. Even though it will be an inside dog, will it get lots of exercise or not? How much are you concerned about shedding? I need some deets and then I can give you my breed opinion. LOL

Well Miss Molly is a Shih Tzu. She's not going to get much bigger than she already is (maybe 10lbs.) She's perfect for the stage of life that we're at. We wanted a house/lap dog. She's got an amazing little personality, she's certainly tolerant of the kids and the cat. She is a non-shedding breed. When we started thinking about getting another dog, we knew this is exactly what we were looking for.
I grew up with Llasa's, so I knew what to expect in a small dog.

Our first dog though, was a Golden Retriever. He was our first baby and an amazing companion. He was great with our babies when we brought them home. Oh we loved him so so much. He got sick though, cancer, and we had to put him down when he was 7. :( That was 5 years ago. Our kids still talk about how much they miss him.

Shedding is a big deal. I really don't want a long haired pooch. And I was thinking medium/large too. We are an active bunch, so I am positive it will get lots of exercise.

We have what some call deer chihuahua...he is bigger than a normal tiny chihuahua and has longer legs. Short hair. holds up to my daughter dragging him all over the house. Ours is about 12 lbs or so. I think she would traumatize a teachup chihuahua since they are so little. He has been a great dog for us and have had him since Kenzie was about 6...

I feel like I should add that my Leo is a German Shepherd and he is the best dog ever...so unbelievably great with all kids, but I had to cross GSDs off the list when you said shedding was an issue.
