Happy National Spaghetti Day!

We’ve been eating food storage spaghetti bites lately but yesterday I finally bought full spaghetti again.

I grew up eating a ground beef red sauce over spaghetti. Now we eat spaghetti with chili or spaghetti with red sauce.

How do you top your spaghetti?

We actually had spaghetti last night for dinner- with meatballs and a red sauce. I am 1/4 Italian (my mom's mom immigrated to the USA at age 10 with her family), but my grandfather (her husband) didn't like Italian food when she got married so she didn't cook it for my mom growing up, so my mom didn't learn any wonderful Italian recipes from her mom. My grandmother's sister/my mom's aunt/my great-Aunt Mary did come and teach both my mom and I some awesome recipes back in the late 90s so I have her tips and tricks for Chicken Parmesan/Chicken Parmigiana and some tips for making sure the pasta is cooked correctly but no passed down sauce recipes. I use Rachael Ray's Spaghetti and Meatballs recipe for my meatballs, but tend to cheat and use Ragu pasta sauce instead of making my own. Here is the recipe for the meatballs from Rachael: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/rachael-ray/spaghetti-and-meatballs-recipe-1942620

When I'm gone after work, one of my hubbies go to meals that he can make is spaghetti. We always make it with red sauce and meatballs. I used to just brown up some ground turkey and put that in the sauce, but I tried meatballs once and everyone loved them, so that's the thing we do now. :giggle

Thanks for the meatballs recipe! I usually just buy the frozen ones and cook them in red sauce all day so they absorb the flavor.

My kids don’t love the texture of ground meat so we usually skip the meat. They do love meatballs though!

Growing up my mother used Spatini Sauce Mix to make red sauce and she added browned ground beef to it. Years ago Lawry's bought Spatini, so I switched to jarred sauces. Nowadays I use Franceso Rinaldi Sweet and Tasty ... it's as close to Spatini as I've ever found.

Now and then I'll switch out my pasta, but I've never put a different topping on spaghetti.

I make my sauce with ground (lean) italian sausage -- turkey Italian sausage, if I can get it. With Rao's sauce. Yum. We also have a "By The Bucket" spaghetti restaurant right near us where you can buy a buck of spaghette with meatballs and garlic bread that is really inexpensive. We often grab that for a quick dinner.

I’ll have to look for that sauce. I tried Rao’s after hearing about it here. It was good but too expensive for my liking. I’ve also made my own sauce with canned crushed tomatoes but now I’m too lazy for that.

That restaurant sounds amazing! I wish there was one by me! My daughter could live on spaghetti and fruit lol

Most of the time it's ground beef and red sauce on spaghetti. We don't have it very often anymore because I think everyone got burned out on it lol. I have made Cheesy Spaghetti a few times and a Creamy Shrimp Spaghetti. Sometimes, if we want super fast and easy, I just cook spaghetti in chicken broth instead of water and then just top with some lemon pepper.

My oldest is burned out on it lol so now I try to sneak it in every other week instead of every week. Thanks for the links to switch it up!

normally ground hamberguer with sauce added .. sometimes I top it with sharp cheese (after all I am from wisconsin) and I serve with bread sticks.
sometimes I will get fancy and make mini meatballs..

Mmmmm yes to topped with sharp cheese! You'd think I was from Wisconsin with how much I love cheese haha

We have it every couple of weeks. I'll make it in different ways. Some times just red sauce, sometimes ground sausage with red sauce, sometimes meatballs, sometimes ground turkey...it just depends on what I have on hand and how much time I have. My kids' fave would be with meatballs.

We have spaghetti frequently. We almost always use a jarred spaghetti and our favorite of late is Rao's. I prefer to add a bit of heavy cream to the Rao's.

I did make spaghetti at my mom's for her, and all she had were cans of tomato sauce or petite diced tomatoes and tons of spices. So I followed my mom's footsteps and just started adding and adding, and the end result was amazingly delish.

Spaghetti Noodles:
  • Spaghetti Pie - these ones are so fabulous for the bites! More cheesy, bit more work: https://www.melskitchencafe.com/spaghetti-pie-my-familys-favorite-dinner/ or easier: https://tastesbetterfromscratch.com/spaghetti-pie/ or I have a Spicy Spaghetti Pie from America's Test Kitchen that has pepperonis in it, shredded cheese, no cottage cheese, no other meat, and it's super easy.
  • Burned butter with mizithra cheese. Nick worked at Old Spaghetti Factory for awhile, so we make this at home. Sometimes we add broccoli or mushrooms or chicken.
  • Red Sauce with Italian sausage and ground beef mixed together. I double this, and freeze half. Then dinner is just reheat the sauce next time! We also like red sauce with mushrooms, no meat.
  • There's also just noodles, cooked, add about 2 tablespoons of butter, mix to melt. Then top with shredded cheese. Sharp or gouda are really good for this one!
  • Fettucini Alfredo - but with spaghetti noodles. Because I'm not picky, and my family doesn't know the difference! We sometimes add chicken or mushrooms to this one.
And sometimes we do chicken parmesan.

My kids prefer meatballs too but we usually do meatball subs.

Ooh I’ll have to try adding heavy cream to Raos. Good job adding and adding too! I bet it was delicious!
