today's technique is using Clipping Masks....did anyone do my MOC challenge this year or 2 years ago? Clipping masks are easy peasy and this scrap will not be as difficult =)

Does anyone NOT use clipping masks or know what they are?

Here is a link to Krista's tutorial and then we'll go on about our scrap

Most of the time, we use clipping masks on our LOs to confine a photo within an opening, whether that opening is from a template, or just a square we've made. BUT....clipping masks can be used is soooo many more ways. Today
we are going to explore some of the other ways to use clipping masks.

INSTRUCTIONS
#1 - Start with a DARK background....black, dark gray or brown, navy....I don't mind what color or pattern, but it must be DARK
#2 - Using your shape tool, draw a large square (or rectangle if your page isn't square), leaving about 1/2 inch of the dark paper as a border.
#2b - Layer a neutral paper on top of the shape in #2 and using a clipping mask, clip that paper to the shape.

TIP: In PS, this would be layer->create clipping mask
#3 - Add a large brush mark, paint element, or a shape other than a square/rectangle, that will be the opening for your photo. It can be anything other than just a plain square shape.
#3b - Layer your photo over the item in #3 and again, using a clipping mask, clip your photo to that item

TIP: The shortcut in PS is Command (or Control)- G

#4 - Using a *thick* font, add a title or word.
#4b - Layer a patterned paper over the word and again, using a clipping mask, clip the paper to the word.

TIP: Clipping masks can be used for just about anything....you can clip a photo or paper to any shape
#5 - Choose an element and add it to your page
#5b - Using a layer adjustment (ie: curves, hue/saturation, etc....) change the element in some way. Be sure to clip that adjustment layer to the element, so that you aren't changing the whole layout.

#6 - add anything else you want to make the layout your own. Don't forget shadows and the date =)

NOTE: Just to be clear, since this scrap is different from what we usually do, the requirements are to use clipping masks 4 ways: (1) clip a paper to a square, (2) clip a photo to a shape/paint/brush, (3) clip a patterned paper to a text layer, and (4) clip an adjustment to an element to change it's color/saturation/brightness/ etc.... Other than that...the layout can be completely your own! ;)

This is a slow scrap, meaning you have 24 hours to complete your LO. As with all scraps, you must have your page posted here and in the Speed Scrap Gallery by: 2pm EST- April 26 to qualify! I will be PMing the eligible scrappers their participation prize from this thread. I can't wait to see what you all come up with!

If you have any questions or confusion, join Cheryl tonight for a live scrap using these instructions!

Clipped off white paper to shape and then clipped hue saturation level to that to change paper color to pink... on font layer clipped pattern paper ... used mask from Paula Kesselring for the flower photo... also clipped hue saturation level to the leaf to darken the shade of the leaf under the button. I love clipping masks! Thanks for the fun Farrah!!

This looks like such fun. I have used all these methods of clipping masks before. For me, I usually created the new clipping mask for paper layers and photos by using the selection tool as opposed to using the shape tool. I use the "clip to a font" probably the least of all the techniques since I love to use alphas that coordinate with a kit. However, that would be great for kits that don't come with an alpha. I'll be back later with my layout. So sorry I missed the chat, I was catching a live class on Macro Photography over at Creative Live.

So I went with "shape other than a square/rectangle" with my ovals- then I added an inner shadow to make it look cut out from the background paper :)

What time is Cheryl's live scrap. There are a couple areas I am not understanding????? :cornfused

Thank you for the challenge. I wasn't able to catch the chat as the Creative Live class on Playing with Flowers and Macro Lens started at the same time and ran for the next 7 hours (less small breaks & lunch). It was a fantastic class but I did miss chatting with all of you.
For the challenge I used the adjustment layer (hue/saturation) to recolored a button and the fabric rosette. I even cut out a bit of another button and used a blending mode to add some color to the center of the recolored button. Great fun!!!! I originally used a worn envelope to clip to the title, but the directions said patterned paper, so I switched it out. My photo is clipped to a painted photo mask that extends above and below the frame.

Here is my page:

Well, I got to the 8pm one too late and the part I needed help with was already gone by. So off I went to YouTube and found videos on the two questions I had and now I have learned even more about PSE!!!!!! Doin' a happy dance!! And here is my layout.
Did my square shape (believe it or not I did NOT know about the shape tool !! Thanks YouTube!!) and clipped a paper to it. I uploaded a paint blob and clipped my photo to it. Then did a nice big title and clipped a paper to it. I used the Adjustment Layer (again----thank you YouTube!) on the round "sweet" button to change the color. The original had too much gray in it. I used the Photo Filter. Hope that takes care of everything!!

OK have been trying to put a corrected layout with the date on it in here, but I keep getting the same layout without the date-----so the gallery is showing the corrected layout with the date on it. Is there a tutorial anywhere on how to take out the wrong layout from a thread and put in a corrected one????
