Silly Christmas Tree Question....

So, we are now getting our Christmas tree this week, since my oldest birthday just passed. I'm thinking about the decorations. Boxes are coming up and all the decorations that come out. Our tree is against the wall on one side, and the rest is open to the living room and dining room.

Here is my question.... If you have part of the tree facing the wall, do you decorate that side too?

I do, and I've realized that I say "Don't forget to put some ornaments on the back of the tree." It's kind of funny. No one sees that area. It's like it's backside is empty, and it will have feelings that it's not covered! :giggle I do push my tree almost against the wall. Our house isn't big, and I don't like it taking up a lot of space.

A friend does not decorate the back. It's in the corner, and she gets it pretty close to the wall, and does not decorate the back. I find this intriguing.

I never really thought about this, but I guess I generally thought everyone decorated the whole tree. The silly things in life....

What about you? Do you have any decorating quirks or peculiarities?

We'd save our "ugly" ornaments for the back, just in case someone looked back there. We now have our tree in front of our living room window, so you can see it from outside. We don't care what's put back there anymore, just as long as something is there.

That said, we don't put many ornaments on the bottom of the tree below the window.

Jenn, I do as you do not want the tree to be front heavy. I remember my Mother's last Christmas... prior to that over the years the day after Christmas I would go with her to all the Hallmark stores to get the lighted ornaments at 50% off. The Christmas the month before she passed away she wanted my Father to put them all on the tree so she could see them from the couch. Because she wanted to see them, all the weight of all the ornaments were all on the front sides of the tree and it fell over.

I generally put ornaments I do not particularly care for on the back side of the tree just for balance. I do not want the tree to fall over. :)

Enjoy your Christmas decorating!!

Our tree is in a little alcove corner, and I shove it in so that the limbs actually are pushed up.
I don't want the tree to be in the walking area. My DS10 goes thru the house like an elephant!
So, I don't decorate the back at all. I use white and gold garland and beads so as I am wrapping around that is the turn back area! lol

I do. But that's because the angle of our tree against the wall. It can be seen as you come down the stairs from one angle. And from the kitchen table from another angle. So, even though it's against the wall, it's not invisible.

Plus, my mom always had too many ornaments for the front of the tree alone, so we decorated the whole thing regardless of where it sat.

Funny... there is usually an "ugly"side of the tree. That one is smooshed closer to the wall! :giggle. I totally get the bottom of the tree, lol!

It's not so much for balance for us... mainly, it's just what I did as a kid. A few years ago, my BIL was wrestling in front of the tree with his kids... and knocked the tree over. I was bummed as I lost a few precious ornaments that day. I'm at the point, where I have too many ornaments and don't take them all out!

I think every year my tree gets a little more smooshed into the wall. :giggle I was actually looking at half trees - the artificial ones. I think that might solve my silly question!

True, depending on where you are, you can see the back... I guess I have a sliver that might not get an ornament, but most of it does! :)

That's what I did with our old tree, which was in a corner of the living room. Lots of kid-made ornaments are back there. ;)

Now we have a narrow 9' tree in our foyer, placed in the "turn" of the front staircase. Technically you can see all sides of the tree because you can view it from the stairs so I tried to keep the ugly stuff low in the back.

I decorate the back. Sometimes I put ornaments that aren't my favorites on there, but you can see all the sides of our tree where we have it now.

There is enough space between the branches of our tree that you can see ornaments that are hanging in the back, through the tree from the front. I always decorate the entire tree, including hanging ornaments farther inside, near the trunk. I like it to be "full". :)

I have a tall skinny tree (pencil tree) that goes in the corner. I have to admit I don't decorate the back. The tree is prelit and I put silver beading with red & silver ornaments on the front/sides you see. I don't like a "busy" tree so I love my minimalist tree.

I place ornaments all around the tree, even though part of it is against a wall. You can see through the tree and to me, it just looks better. I do like to stand and look at all the ornaments. I **do** tend to put my favorites in my direct sight line so I can enjoy them all the time without having to move around the tree.

That half tree looks pretty cool!

Also, every year, hubby and I discuss when both kiddos are gone, that we won't put up a tree anymore . . . likely something smaller like a tabletop tree.

A little bit, ours is wedged in a corner but if I can see bare parts from any angle I could potentially take a photo on Xmas morning then I add extra deco's after the kids have finished decorating (& I move theirs most the time anyway to have a more even mix of colours - this year they picked pink, blue & silver & everything else went back in the box but they ended up with groups of blue & pink etc & it looked a bit odd to me - I'm sure other people would just left it!

We have 2 trees - mine is in the front window of the living room and I put the ugly ornaments back there above the window sill too!! The kid's tree is in the corner of the family room and most of the decorating of it is up to them. It is in a corner, so the backside is bare.

Yeah, I will probably go to one tree once they all leave home, but will save the ornaments in case someone wants the 30+ hard Sesame Street ornaments and 30+ hard Disney characters.

Our tree is in front of the window, and I'm another that puts the ugly ones back there. It's a skinny one, so it takes no time at all to fill up lol

LOL! I've thought of this too. Ours sits a little way out from the wall so it gets decorated all around, although I'm not really sure what it looks like this year. I let my kids do it all. I sort of fixed up the front a tiny bit after they were done but didn't even look at the back.

Up until this year our tree has always been in front our our picture window, so we did decorate the whole tree. But this year I didn't want to rearrange all the furniture in the room just for the tree, so I took out one chair and put it in the corner... but we still decorated the whole tree. Mostly out of habit. Lol. In the end it was a good thing though because when we got done the tree looked awfully crooked and I didn't want it to fall over, so we rotated it around to lean towards the corner. :giggle It's probably the most gangly tree we've ever had. sigh.

I'm sure other people would just left it!
No, I would have changed it, too. Each year I write on a solid-color ornament for each child. They tell me their fave book, movie, color, etc (and I wrote it all, plus their age and grade). Anyway, the earliest ones are silver; now DS picks a red ornament and until last year DD picked hot pink...so I have to spread theirs out or the tree looks... funky.

HaHa! If you have kids... there is definitely a side that must look funky! Between the stages where they decorate... and you aren't supposed to move it around, or the school ornaments, or just the weird or non-favorite ornaments.
