I'm currently building up my art journaling stash and I'm thinking of starting with the basics. What would you recommend for an art journaling beginner like me? Papers, elements, brushes, styles and the like.

Hmmm...I say start with what "calls" to you. There is a section in the TLP Store for Art Journaling - you'll find lots of mixed media inspired ephemera and digital kits there. https://the-lilypad.com/store/Art-Journaling-Mixed-Media/

If you are looking for organic supplies, I'd say visit this thread here. Susie @Pachimac asked about supplies too. You'll find wonderful lists in that thread.

Thank you for the links! I'll definitely take a look at that store category. As for organic supplies, I don't think I'm ready to delve into physical art journaling yet but will keep the thread in mind for future reference.

I totally agree with Lisa. Look through the category and see what speaks to you, especially when it comes to products.

I'm drawn to paint a lot, so not only do I check the art journaling, I also like to look at Photoshop Tool - Brushes, and CU - brushes/paint. There's a lot of cool brushes that call to me to use.

Hmm, I think I'm drawn into brushes, especially foliage brushes. I also love plain, textured papers, natural elements and scattered bits. Great tips on searching outside of the Art Journaling category. Thanks!

I highly recommend getting some gesso elements or overlays. I think they really help with a page that just doesn't feel finished.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you have any example pages using gesso elements or overlays?

For starters, I recommend starting with a thick paper sketchbook designed for watercolor or acrylic paint. And I think these are the 5 supplies you should have when starting out, of course Journal or Sketchbook with Heavy Duty Paper, Acrylic or watercolor paints and brushes (Baby paints and cheap craft paints are fine!), Gel Pens and Markers, old Books or Magazines and a Heavy Duty Glue Stick.

@zakirahzakaria I didn't see this before!
I can't help but post about my own products when it comes to art journaling and mixed media supplies as that's what I create week in week out :-)
My shop is packed with natural elements, foliage stamps, ready made art papers or collage papers, stitches and threads and much more.
For me the things I use the most are the ready made art papers or Collage Papers, Paper Pieces, stitches and threads and the natural botanical elements.
Here is a very small sampling - tons more packed into my shop :)
Please let me know if you need any more help, product requests or more example layouts - there are lots of layouts posted in the shop images to start with :beat
