Way back when I was in high school I made Christmas ornaments with simple foam balls, and you could use pins, sequins, and beads to make beautiful things like this:
For the past several years, I keep looking in the craft stores but I never see the foam ornaments. They were foam and had a very sheer kind of thread wound all around. Does anyone remember them? Or, more importantly, know where to buy them?

) and they never had any thread wound around them. I don't know how hard it would be to find the fun shapes they used to do back then, but for normal round balls, any craft store should have normal styrofoam balls. I've done this too when the kit was incomplete. They don't come with the loop on the top, but the ones in the kit never did either so I never really thought about it. They make long wires with a loop on one end, available in the jewelry making section of a craft store. Throw a little superglue on the end and stab it in the styrofoam ball. Done.
