I usually have one that I try to stick to. And they are mostly about improving myself. One Year when I was younger and seat belts weren't mandatory... so I made that my resolution, to wear it. One year was to increase my water intake, which I did. One year was to say yes more often, and that for the most part I do, and make a conscious effort to still.
With mine, they don't start the 1st... I stew on it until I determine one that I will stick to and go that extra mile. Ones that I will commit to for life.
I haven't picked one for 2021 - I'm thinking of the year to take care of me (self care,. doctors, etc) or simple to stop biting my nails (that's hard for me, I have tried in the past)... or a couple others dancing around in my head... I just haven't settled yet.
