Happy June!

Our winner for May's challenge is.... @BLKinOR! Coupons for participants and the winner will be going out!

I thought June would be a good month to choose a fun theme that might get you out and about, so I opted to go for the theme of Scavenger Hunt.

Choose one of the prompts for this month's scavenger hunt and have fun:

*Shadow
*A favorite spot for contemplation
*An interesting bit of texture (pet fur, nubby blanket, cracks in the sidewalk, manhole covers, wood, rusty things, etc.)
*A stack or pile of things (laundry, books, leaves, toys, mail, dirty dishes, etc.)
*Someone dancing
*Your favorite local establishment
*A reflection
*Bits of nature
*Your favorite spoon (having three neurodivergent people in our family, there is always discussion and fights over the "best" spoon)
*A scavenger hunt you create on your own for your family/friends

Tips/Technique/Tutorial
:

With each challenge, a tip/technique/tutorial will be included. There is no pressure to incorporate the tip/technique/tutorial into your challenge page, the choice is entirely yours.

My tip for the month is to be a scavenger in a different way and stretch your stash in a new direction. Use your paper stash to create a digital snippet roll!

I love to think about hybrid scrapping/art journaling all of the time, but I am fairly impatient and don't always have the time or energy to do it. One thing that I think is cool is when analog artists make snippet or collage rolls. A snippet roll is when you take something like a roll of strapping tape or heavy strip of paper (or fabric) and stretch out a length of it, then tear off small pieces of different sorts of paper to make a sort of collage on the tape/paper strip/fabric. (There are also people who do this with fabric.) They call them snippet rolls because generally they roll them up and store them that way once finished with them. Anyway, in the analog world, you tear off pieces of paper and glue/staple them down onto your long strip, making one long collage. Once you have your collage tape, you can stitch over it to secure the papers even more (and also add texture), paint over parts... even doodle or make marks over the top of it. Then you can cut it up and use it as new material. Rachel has made some amazing examples over the years and has shared some images of examples of her gorgeous work.

You can create a digital snippet roll by opening a smaller file and playing with all of your different digital papers. I started mine by creating a file that was 16 inches wide and 2.5 inches tall. I used a cut paper shape brush and made different sized and shaped layers, duplicating some and turning some around in different positions. I then used those layers as clipping masks, putting Rachel's papers down in different positions and using parts of the papers that I particularly liked. Rachel also has a lot of different bits and bobs, pieces of papers, and elements that are great shapes. Even if the colors don't fit your idea for a collage, you can use the shapes of tickets or elements as clipping masks.

Really, the sky is the limit on what you could include in your snippet roll. Once you're satisfied with how it looks, merge your layers and save. Then you can use it as a separate 'paper' to select from and use on your layouts.

Rachel has been incredibly generous and created a couple of virtual paper backgrounds (from her real life paper rolls) for you to use. Here is the link to the download if you want them.

I used papers and elements from Incomparable, Be Kind, and All of This for my example:

I used the prompt of a favorite local establishment. It is sort of meta this month because Tinkertopia is a creative reuse store where they sell weird/random used items as alternative art supplies. Used pictures, cards, old papers, negatives, patterns, fabric swatches, metal bits and pieces... it is endless. It is such a creative place. It makes me want to save and reuse everything... so it fits that I'd want to include it in a post about snippet rolls. I used a section of my collage roll to clip to a scalloped piece of paper from the kit that I'd duplicated so it would add something different. My page here:

And here are a few other pages for inspiration:

Dady created this from the prompt "A Favorite Place for Contemplation” with a beautiful garden view.

Marilyn went for the prompt "pile of" cicadas and gave us this delightful page.

And Rachel added... "
I went with the favourite spot for contemplation. I obscured my personal journaling by handwriting it, photographing it, and turning it into a digital stamp and stamping it around my page.

I made a collage roll using elements and mixed media elements from the kit and clipped them to the paper roll freebie. I then chose to layer this collage roll on the bottom of my page and adjusted the blending modes to blend it in to the background paper. Tip, i actually designed the collage roll at the bottom of my background paper as I was scrapping as I knew this is where it would end up, this ensured it suited the space and that the elements etc were balanced and spaced as i liked. I have saved this file for future use now and I know I'll be pulling it out and adding this collage roll to many other layouts. Thanks for the fun idea!"

This was a fun technique challenge. Sure took a while to create. As for theme, I went with nature and texture.

I had so much fun with this challenge! I scrapped about a favorite local establishment named Forrester's--there were so many perfect elements from Rachel to use for a restaurant with a forest theme! I also enjoyed creating a snippet roll with lots of bits and pieces, and then used it to add some scalloped edges around my focal area.
