Yesterday a little bit of my childhood died. While I was never a huge Prince fan (I was more into John Taylor/Duran Duran) there is no denying his musical gift, talent and artistry he was blessed with. It has been so fun listening to his songs non-stop on the radio...songs I haven't heard or thought of in years but they bring me right back to my middle school and high school years and I find myself smiling and singing along.

Being from the state of Minnesota, the death of Prince has been nonstop news since it was announced around 11:30 yesterday. The tributes at First Ave and Paisley Park have been amazing. I knew he was adored here...our hometown boy. However I never realized his impact on the world as a whole. Seeing other cities and even countries celebrate Prince's life has been so touching.

Another amazing talent gone far too soon.

Do you all add these sorts of tributes to your albums?

My 44 yr. old daughter is grieving, lol! Back in the day, she thought he was one of the sexiest men alive, not withstanding that he couldn't have been much more than 5 ft. tall!

I guess I missed the whole Prince era. I only know the title of one song. Couldn't tell you any of the words, though.

I haven't been back to the Twin Cities since I moved away in '07, but a part of me wished I could have gone back to First Ave yesterday. I like some songs well enough but was never a huge fan or anything. Still, I admired his undeniable talent and influence and was shocked to hear the news. I will at least mention it in my weekly review, but I might make a page.

I remember when he changed his name to the symbol in the nineties. It ran all day on the radio that Prince had died. I knew it had to do with the symbol. I never believed for a minute that he was actually dead. When I saw it yesterday, I knew it was true. He'd looked so sick recently. I just kept thinking "Now Michael Jackson and Prince are both gone". Their ability to see/feel music was so different. It's just such a shame.
My favorite group is still New Kids On The Block. I know it's silly, but they make me happy. The music makes me feel good. I had to tweet my favorite Joey McIntyre & tell him how much his music gets me through even my worst days. I just had to.

I made me so sad. I think I was more upset with Michael Jackson, but I always thought that Prince was amazing and so incredibly talented. Not just with his own music, but what he did as a songwriter and producer too. I wasn't a huge huge fan, and I never saw him in concert, but he was definitely an icon and part of my formative years. His death brought up a lot of memories.

Literally that is all I saw on social all day as soon as the news hit. One of the Seattle radio stations started playing straight Prince music, all day, as soon as they got the news. It was a great tribute. There were so many great songs and some I hadn't heard in years. People called in and they'd share some of the stories/memories when they'd go to commercial. It made me think of the song, American Pie, about the day the music died. :( I'll definitely capture it in my PL pages.

definitely a loss
whether you like his style of music or not, his talent is undeniable, and his body of work should definitely be honored and remembered. he has had such an influence and impact on so many artists.

Seems like such a waste to me, he was so young. What is with these super talented people, burning out before their time?

I am heartbroken. So many greats gone this year. I was never a huge fan, I was more in to hard rock back in the day, but there's no denying that his music shaped the era I grew up in. Some of my favorite songs of his were ones he wrote for others.

I wasn't feeling all that sad until I started hearing his music. I was a teenager in the 80's and the memories that came flooding back.
Always sad when the world loses someone before their time, no matter who they are..

My heart broke when I heard the news. Almost as much as when Michael Jackson died. Hell, I'm STILL mourning MJ. Another part of my late teens died this week too. Chyna from the WWE. Another bad year for celebrities :(

Not a Prince fan and never heard his music but its always sad to see such a talent die so young.

So I have to confess something here. I never thought I was a huge Prince fan. Key word thought. I got the alert on my watch, body found at Prince's mansion. About an hour later, Prince was dead came over. It really hit me hard. I was shocked. I didn't cry, I was just stunned. More so than when Michael Jackson died or even any of the other musical artists that have passed away recently. So I guess his music did impact me more so than I thought. Watching all the tribute pieces to him in the media and hearing his songs reminded me of little snippets of my past when I was listening to his music. He was a pure talent. So sad to see him die so young.

True story about Michael Jackson @weaselwatchr

The day he died, I was at the grocery store with my kids and ABC from Jackson 5 came on. I said to the kids, "we haven't listened to Michael Jackson in a long time, we need to." I was also wondering to myself, how he was doing because I hadn't seen or heard anything about him in a while. Now, this was before I knew he was preparing for a new tour.

We get home, I turn on the TV and there it is. Michael Jackson dead! I was devastated. I grew up listening to him, as I am sure most of us did. I also got the creeps because we had just been talking about him. It was a surreal feeling almost.

Here we are almost 7 years later, and I still miss him. It just makes me sad all these good actors/actresses and musicians are dying and we're stuck with crap like the Kardashians and Kanye West. Bleh.

yes. this.

Sarita (my daughter) said there are lots of tributes to Prince among her friends and that some people started funny stuff link to the wave of great people dying, one of them was suggesting to do something to preserve Stevie Wonder as we cannot do without him......

I wasn't a huge fan of Prince, but liked his music and he means a part of my life that marked me, my early 20s, so I am so so very sad.....
I don't think I have done any tribute pages apart from Frida Khalo..... but have seen some awesome pages here at the Pad, you should have a look at Liana's blog post HERE

I feel kind of like an oddball. I have to admit I don't think I ever heard a single song of his. I may have and don't realize it is one he sang or wrote. I'm kind of old and more into "oldie but goodies" music (folk music, too, as I was in collage during the 60's). I hope others who did admire him take comfort in the legacy of music he left for you/them.

Diane, I'm 99% sure you have heard him..just don't identify him, but he played a lot in the radio in the 80s.
He composed tons of songs that other people sung, but his super hit, that was hyper played in the 80s and still played (before news of his death) is Purple Rain.
The Bangles' Manic Monday , Sinnead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 You, Chaka Kan 's I feel for You, those are songs written by him that you may know? @dvhoward

When hubby and I first started dating I gave him a cassette single of nothing compares to you.

Maybe I will make a tribute page....
