our 6 year old Lab/Greyhound was diagnosed yesterday with arthritis.
:td
She is such a huge part of the family, and my hubby's dog and walking buddy! He took her to the vet, because I cry when she cries.
The arthritis is pretty much everyone, so she is on some meds, daily.
She has only had 3 doses, and is already getting around so much better. The vet wanted her to have two doses yesterday due to the amount of twisting and such he had to do for xrays and exams.
She was so good.
I have been looking around for cheaper meds? Anyone else have your precious pets on a daily medicine routine?

When our lab had her mobility issues, we had this supplement (solid gold seameal) recommended to us. It helped immensely! Nothing in the description says it's specifically for joint issues, but you'll see some of the benefits mentioned in a few of the comments. I had kind of forgotten about since our current dog doesn't have joint issues, but she does shed a lot and lick her paws, maybe I should give it a go with her as well.

So sorry to hear about your pet's condition, it isn't easy to see our fur-babies in pain.

Our previous Labrador retriever was on daily medication to fight cancer in her last year. I was grateful that the medication extended our time with her. She was 11 years old when she passed.

So sorry your baby is suffering.

I give the dogs coconut oil and that is supposed to help them. I think I'm going to try that seameal for them.

I have my cat on daily baby vitamins (liquid). She was so anemic we nearly lost her. The vet told us to put her to sleep, but I refused to give up. She's only 1.5 years old. After being on the daily vitamins and moist food (liver and heart) for two months, she's put on weight and is a totally different cat. I also tried energy healing (Reiki) with her, and swear that it has helped even though my skeptical hubby could go blind from rolling his eyes so hard.

No pets right now, but I have had to medicate, give special diets, etc. before. Poor girl! I hope the meds help tons!

We have an English Springer Spaniel that has a skin condition that requires daily doses of prednisone and periods of antibiotics. It's a pain having to deal with it and we have spent soooooo much money with him at the vet trying to get to the bottom of it. He supposedly had the condition at birth. I will do much better research before we ever get another animal!!!!
Sad thing is that the prednisone will probably eventually lead to other problems etc.....

We've only been dog owners since last Christmas. DH was a dog owner for many many years of his childhood.

I'm going to check out that seameal stuff, because she also sheds and licks her paws. FIL suggested wiping paws with our baby wipes to help with that. I didn't think it was an issue, just a comfort thing.

We had a dog with heart issues. Crazy story, but when he was about 1 1/2, he had heart surgery. When we figured out what was wrong, he was in heart failure. We took him up UC Davis Animal Hospital and they were amazing. They did a heart procedure on him and placed a device in his heart to close up the hole. (And since it was at the school, the cost wasn't too ridiculous.) Fun fact ... the cardiologist vets do a rotation in pediatric cardiology to better learn how maneuver small veins and arteries. Anyway, poor Gibson was on a ton of heart meds. Some meds we ordered from UC Davis and others we sourced from local pharmacies. Costco was a great price. They couldn't get all the drugs we needed but the ones they could get were a huge bargain over private vets. Costco does require membership, but the pharmacy may be an exception. I just can't remember. Call up and ask, just let them know it's for a dog. Last time I was in my store, there was even a sign in the pharmacy window saying to ask them about medicine for pets.

Good luck!!!

My baby is on a daily eye drop for Glaucoma. She had to have the right eye removed already and they are worried it will spread to her left eye so she is on these drops to prevent it from spreading 2 times a day for life. The medication is 50.00 a month and I get it at Walmart right now. I suppose it might be cheaper if I get it at a mail order pharmacy or such. I also have a Costco membership so maybe that would help.

Amanda I too got a dog whom I love to death without researching the breed first. My Cocker Spaniel has cost me so much money from Ear Infections, grooming, Medications, surgery to remove her eye, and now daily medication to prevent having to remove the other one. I never knew how much work Spaniels truly are. I would never get rid of my baby but I wont get another Cocker Spaniel I don't think. Unless I win the lottery because they are the most loving dogs ever.

Anne, you might try adding a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement for your dog as well. Trader Joe's has a great one for pets or you can get the one for humans in bulk at Costco.

I've walked this path with my last German Shepherd. We do what we have to do for our fur babies though!

Our current Shepherd, Calla, takes quite a lot of supplements. Coconut oil, glucosamine and chondroitin and another green thing that DH mixes up for her...totally blanking out on that one. It has definitely helped her to be healthier.

a year ago cooper could barely make it up the stairs and could not get on the bed. also was itching like crazy.

long story short -
tried prednisone helped a little
tired organic virgin coconout oil ( for health purpses you do not want refined) - helped a l ittle

now used together the effect magnified humongously - he is like a new dog . i have never seen this mentioned anywhere on the web.
so the past year he is on a very low dose prednison and take cocnut oil twice a day. for years he has been taking glucosamine.

at age ten he has more energy and moves better then he has had in years

We've had to do lots for our previous pup, Mack! He had issues with his glands. He became obsessive-compulsive about it, and was biting and itching himself because he couldn't reach the areas that were bothering him. He had raw patches all over his body. It was sad. After surgery, the biting/itching was better and he was on a special diet, plus medicines. His treats were carrots and he was a vegetarian, lol!

It's tough to see your family, any family, go through medical things that you can't fix yourself. Hugs, Ann!

she is so spoiled from everyone...she gets full body massages and I moved a small couch in front of the window, so she can bask in the sun..it makes her feel so good

i use the costco glucosamine and chondroitin supplement - no need to pay more for a dog version. same with fish oil.
