Paint for chipboard

I am making a mini-album of my NYC trip! I have two chipboard covers that I would like to spray paint white, except I have no idea what kind of paint to use!

Does anyone know what kind of paint would be best for this? Do they make special craft paints? I have no idea about this. The only craft store nearby is Michael's.

Thank you so much for any information you can provide!

:heartlub

Wouldn't gesso be a good place to start? Idk. Tim Holtz uses chipboard a lot, I'd look on his site for research

Gesso, or acrylic.

Even the inexpensive Apple Barrell ones at Michael's will do the job. Tim Hotz and Heidi Swapp have white paints, I think ... but I wouldn't want to then cover it, lol!

I would hesitate to use spray paint just because of the smell, but the craft paints that were mentioned would totally do the trick! Kristina mentioned gesso, which is an art primer and would help with coverage. It's fairly inexpensive and is on the art aisle.

1-2 coats of gesso and 1-2 coats of paint should do it.

Can't wait to see what you come up with! Be sure to come back here and post pretty pictures for us! :)

This sounds so scary to me and I used to write a column on hybrid scrapping! I have become a chicken in my old age. Give me digital every time! Good luck!

Thank you so much, ladies! I knew I would get the best information here! I'm writing all this down to take with me to Michael's.

Thank you! I didn't really know what gesso was! I skipped over paper crafting (well, I skipped over anything that required more than a glue stick) and went straight to digiscrapping.

Actually, you just gave me a great idea! I was going to paint the cover white & attach a postcard to it, but now I think I will leave the cover white & do something in the corner.

Now you're scaring me! :) In my head this is all very easy, but I have a feeling in practice it will be far more complicated than I realize!

Don't be scared, Melanie! Painting chipboard is super easy! A foam brush will help, too, so you might want to get a couple of those while you're shopping.

If you want to dabble in some of the more artsy mediums and want a gentle introduction, I recommend watching some of Wilna Furstenburg's videos. https://www.youtube.com/user/71babe/videos She is a paper scrapper, and lots of paper scrappers are scared of art mediums, too! She makes it look so easy and effortless, and her pages are simply gorgeous. :) She paints all kinds of things- die cuts and chipboard included- and tells you exactly how she does everything.

Thank you so much for the encouragement & the link! I will definitely start watching her videos! It looks like there's some very interesting things in her videos! I picked up all my supplies today - except the foam brush! Gah! I looked at the foam brush but the directions on it said it was good for varnishing or something or other, so I put it back & picked up a regular brush.

I will let you all know how it goes!

I bookmarked her videos, thanks.

I went and watched one of her videos last night and it got me all excited to play around and watch some more! Thanks for the link! :)

I always used a foam brush too, Melanie, just don't put it on too heavy, you don't want it to bubble and peel.

I like using foams like the ones for makeup? :D It will give a smooth finish if you like that. It could be messy so just put on some gloves (I use disposable ones).
