Wow! Talked to a friend who is buying a dress for her daughter for Homecoming and apparently it's been a long time since I have seen the prices on formal dresses.

I think....way back to 1982.....my dress cost $100 which was a lot back then.

Did you go to your homecoming? Are things that much different than years ago?

I never had homecoming dances because I went to a private school and we never had football, so we just had prom. I have three girls though, so I KNOW I am in trouble in a few years when I will need to start buying these dresses - YIKES!

I only ever went to one Homecoming and didn't have an overly fancy dress for it either (man was I awkward!). no idea about the price then or now...and i do have a daughter, but as there is no football in Germany...I doubt she'll ever be going to a homecoming dance. Kind of sad...

My parents didn't allow dances. So no...no prom or homecoming for me. I was awkward anyway :)

No homecoming here, but we do have prom. My daughter's "friend" has asked me if he can take her to his prom....in March. We can have dresses made here, but I figured I wanted to actually SEE what it looked like. So we went shopping online and found a few places that sold prom dresses for less than $200 including shipping.

Didn't realize that some prom dresses now are s.h.o.r.t. Always thought they had to be long!

Oh, I ended up buying one long dress and one short dress, :p Then we'll pick what she'll wear.

We don't have Proms here in Oz but my eldest daughter has a Semi-formal dance next year (year 11) and a formal dance in Year 12. Cocktail dresses for the Semi and floor length dresses for the Formal.

Don't laugh be we have bought her Semi dress already as we saw the MUST HAVE dress and we happened to have a gift certificate for the shop so overall it was cheaper than I feared. I am not looking forward to buying her formal gown as most girls dresses from this year are from 300 to 500 dollars .... freaking out!

My daughter always wore short dresses to homecoming and tried to keep them under $150. Her senior prom dress was an all-day shopping affair. The dress she selected I would have paid through the nose for because it was just exquisite on her. It ended up being on sale and right around $200 so I was thrilled. It really is the prettiest dress like that I've ever seen!

This weekend was Homecoming for my daughter! It was her first time, as she's a Freshman. Her dress was about $250...although once you add in hair, mani/pedi, shoes, purse, etc. Oy. She had an awesome time though, so it's worth it.

My high school had homecoming. I went with dates all four years, but I have absolutely no idea what my dresses cost.

The one thing that stood out for me as really different was the asking. Back in my day, a simple "Will you go to Homecoming with me?" was enough. Now, the boys have to do these elaborate public things to ask. Decorate lockers, paint cars, sidewalk chalk...you name it. It seems like so much pressure for them, but it's a HUGE thing at my DD"s high school.

Oh yes, we had homecoming and Prom, and they still do. And yep I went and my parents forked out the bucks for the formal! LOL! I have another year before my Emma hits high school. But, I would say the prices are pretty comparable. We've gone to a number of formal weddings over the last year and her dresses were all under $100. I so hope it stays that way!

I did go to a couple formal dances in high school, but we didn't have a lot of money, so my parents said I could go if I bought my own dress. I got really good and finding the sales and bargains! I think I even found one once for around $30! I know I never paid much more than $50 for any of them.

Makes me kinda happy I have boys! :)

For formal dances I think the only dress I ever bought- or rather, my parents bought- was for prom and it was about $100. For homecoming and other formal dances I borrowed from friends a lot, since I knew I would only wear the dress once anyway. I did that for homecoming in college too, to save money.

Way back when I was in high school (I have a child in college so let's just say I am old) we didn't wear anything formal. My whole outfit (skirt, sweater) probably cost $50, if that. I can't believe homecomings is another prom now!!! When I was in school the girls wore a skirt and sweater and the boys wore a dress shirt, tie and dress pants....nothing too expensive like prom dressed and tuxes!!

I went to all four homecomings during high school and went to one after I graduated too b/c I was dating a younger guy that was still in high school!!

We won't talk about how much by junior prom dress cost....it was more than my wedding dress...GULP!

My twins, who are freshman this year, are going to homecoming this weekend with a group of their friends. They are wearing cocktail length dresses that I bought for them. I think I paid $30 or so for them on sale at a nice department store. The girls are dancers, so they like things sparkly when it comes to dresses and they are jazzed up enough with glitter and such that they don't look like 'everyday' dresses. They can, and do, wear them to church on Sunday mornings. Carissa must have grown since we bought the dress though, since I don't remember it being quite that short when we got it LOL

The girls paid for their own shoes and dance tickets ($18 each, yikes!). It's more a fun evening to go out with their friends than anything, so they aren't putting a whole lot of emphasis on what to wear and all that.

When my daughter gets to this age/stage, she's in deep trouble. My wedding dress was $150 (1993). My Senior Prom dress was $90 (1991). My Junior Prom dress was $65(1990). Oh and rewore the junior prom dress for the Valentine's Dance the next year (I attended prom at a different school than the Valentine's dance). Still have all three. I suggest she decides to go retro/vintage!! LOL

Wow, I've met you face to face and you don't look anywhere near old enough to have a child in college...just wow.

I was homeschooled, so no homecoming for me...my daughter is homeschooled as well, so probably there won't be one for her either.

No dances for me. Figured it wasn't worth the money if no boy wanted to go with me badly enough to ask, kwim?

I would have a hard time spending more than $100-$150 on a dress that she's only going to wear once, though. I'm sure Hubs would buy her a million dollar dress if she wanted one. :giggle
