Pad Patter 7.8.15: Origin of your Name

Linda is the Spanish word for beautiful, but my parents are not Spanish, and I am not beautiful. I'm actually named after an airplane. A B-17 to be exact. My dad was a very decorated WWII bombardier who actually flew the mission the movie Memphis Bell was based on. His plane was the Lindy Lou and I was christened Linda Lee in her honor. My dad never talked about the war, and as kids we never knew. I'll never forget that moment in my life when after my dad passed and the funeral director (who was also a veteran of the same war) called us into his office in a great dilema to tell us he had never had the honor to put to rest another soldier who was as decorated as my dad. All the metals would not fit on his stone. The silver cross and a Metal from the king of Norway took top billing. I'm very proud to wear my name.

This is awesome. totally gave me goosebumps to read this. I sure hope you've scrapped this amazing story!

My name is Natasha - I am named after my dad's favourite actress at the time - Natalie Wood...but my mom wouldn't allow Natalie, so Natasha it is. I don't meet too many people named Natasha. My middle name, as is all my sibling's middle names, was given to me by my mom's father. My mom is Chinese, so I have the middle name Guy Ting (Ting for short) - it means like a willow (I think).

My oldest daughter is named Logan - XMen had just come out, and I really liked the name Logan, plus it was good for both boys and girls (we didn't find out until she was born). And again, she has a middle name picked by my grandfather - Chia Chen, it means the family pearl.

My son's name is Tanner - named after a snowboarder that we saw in the XGames. It was just a different, cool sounding name, and we both liked it immediately. His middle name is Chia Chih, which means the purpose or determination of the family.

My youngest daughter's name is Payton, named after some character on some tv show (One Tree Hill, I think) that was popular at the time I was pregnant. Again, it worked for either a girl or a boy. Her middle name is Chia Ying, which has two meanings - red jade and heroine (not the drug kind - think female hero) of the family.

My fiance's name is Erin - yup...spelled like girl. Which I didn't even think twice of when we first met...his father is Irish, and it quite literally means Ireland. His middle name, Patrick is for his father and mother (Patrick and Patricia).

My name's Pallavi - and I absolutely LOVE it and the meaning of my name :) It means first sound of music :) So legend has it that my parents named me something else. But all my older cousins hated that name. So when I was going for my kingarten interview (In India you had school interview where the principal met the child and parents and asked a few questions..tasks etc.)...

anyways...so when i was leaving for my school interview..my older cousins all prepped me up that when the Principal asks me my name - I should say Pallavi. To my mum's horror - thats exactly what i did ! lol :) My mum was really keen on that school and thought i had blown my chances of getting through as I didn't even know my name! but the principal loved Pallavi and laughed it off ...so Pallavi I have been since then. :)

Great thread though Jen! Loving reading about everyone's names! amazing history here!

Another Jennifer here...ya know...because I was born in 1979...wasn't that every baby girl's name that year?? :thumbsdowns

Hey!! I was born in 1979 too!! In a different part of the world though....else I would be Jennifer too! hahhaha :)

Names are fun!

Our family uses middle names to keep track of our family - this goes back many generations - over 9 of them!

9 generations! Wow! that is so super impressive! I know my family's history only going back 3 generations...therefore super impressed that you have some history going back 9 generations!

That is an amazing story.

My name actually is from the Hebrew ShoShanna and means lily. Only when researching names for my own babies did I find this out. Coincidentally my mum's name is Lily but she didn't know this connection at all. My Dad wanted to call me Susan but my mum fancied it up a bit to Suzanne (thanks - I have always loved my name). My middle name is after my mum's sister who died as a baby before she was born. Eileen. I don't like it much at all and it seems creepy to name a baby after a dead baby - it was just to keep my Grandma happy I think.

My parents believed the sonogram in 1978 that said I was going to be a boy. They only came up with a boy name (Jason) because they were THAT confident in the brand new technology. One day my mom was asked by the cashier at Publix (grocery store) what she planned to name the baby. When she told her, the cashier asked about a girls name and was shocked to find that they hadn't chosen one. After a lengthy conversation she casually mentioned that her name (Lisa) would be a good name for a baby girl. Now, 36 years later, I love to tell people that I was named after the check out girl at Publix :)

My children both have family names, one from each side of the family.

The Jennifer pattern in this thread is amusing. Though I am not named Jennifer, I am about the same age as most of the Jen/Jenny/Jennifer's at TLP and I have about 18 (not kidding) Jennifer's in my phone contact list. I know SO MANY!!

It also made me think of an article I read last fall about how you can sometimes tell how old someone is by their name. It's all based on naming trends of the past and when certain names hit the top of the list. It was a good read, so I found the link if anyone is interested :)

When my mom was pregnant with me, the doctor said I would be a boy, I think based on heartbeat, which isn't very accurate. But all my parents' previous pregnancies were boys so they believed it, and I was going to be Patrick until I finally came out and they were like, whaaa? Fortunately, my dad had always wanted a daughter named Lorry, so they didn't have to think hard on the name. It was just a surprise. When they introduced me to my big brothers, I am told one of them said, "she's great, but where's the new brother you promised?"

My name means "having to be loved", "deserving to be loved" or simply "worthy of love" and my Mum picked it because I was the first living child she had managed to carry to term (8 miscarriages + 1 still born child) and she believed I was a miracle of Love :D .... which of course I am because I AM that awesome

I was born in 1973. I went to school with lots of Jennifers, Jennys, Jen(n)s, and even a Ginny. LOL.

I'm Kimberly. In my schooling, there was usually one other Kimberly. It was pretty easy to deal with. She usually preferred Kim and I liked Kimberly. My mom wasn't a fan of Kim, so if she ever shortened my name, it was Kimber. I don't mind if a friend calls me Kim as a nick name. What I don't really like is to be known as Kim. I know that sounds weird. I still remember receiving an award in high school. The principal called me up as Kim. The award was written out as Kim. That, I don't like. We had an exchange student from Thailand who laughed and said I had a boy name. :( No! My name is Kimberly, not Kim. My town even had a Chinese restaurant called "Kim's".

Anyway, there was no special magical reason Kimberly was my name, other than the fact my mom liked it. It was a bit of a disappointment to look in the name book and see it meant "Royal fortress meadow." huh?? what??

I have a cousin named Kimberly (but she goes by her middle name, Jill). I'll have to tell her about the special meaning of her 1st name, hehe

Amanda this made me all "awwww", then all :giggle . All the feels as my teenager would say, all the feels. LOL.
