Geocaching

Have you done it? Do you like it?

We do it a bit. The kids like it as long as they aren't too hard to find, then they just get annoyed.

I'm working on a series now (alone) that involves solving a bunch of puzzles. Not sure I'll even get through the first one. :giggle

We also hid one. It's fun to get the emails when someone logs that they found it or didn't find it.

We haven't done any but we'd really like to.

I'd like to try letterboxing too...that seems fun as well but I haven't done any orienteering since I was a teen so I'd have to relearn.

I should look up sites around here and see what's close.

We tried it once last summer, went to two different spots in our town and found nothing. :( my boys REALLY want to do it again, so I need to research a bit more and see if I can find some more for us to look for.

Yep! We have done it quite a few times. In the state park we live in (and Eric manages) it's a big thing. He has a bunch of GPS systems and puts on classes for people all year long. Ella had a geocaching party for her birthday this year, it was fun putting together the caches for the girls full of fun stuff like tattoos, tiny nail polish, etc. Eric 'inherited' a bunch of caches after one of his volunteers passed away and the man's wife asked Eric to take care of all of that man's caches. So, he gets emails all the time that people have found them.

The kids get bummed when we find one without anything in them. When we go out they clean out their rooms and find old small crap they want to trade for whatever is in the cache.

We found one when we were at the beach last weekend, the kids LOVED it!! It is like treasure hunting! Here they are with their "treasure"!

I would never have thought of a geocaching birthday party, what a fun idea!!! We may have to do that for my daughter, they would have a blast!! How did it work, did an adult with a smart phone go with each kid or did you have extra handheld GPS'? I want to do this!!!

Check the logs before you go and make sure someone has found it recently. Sometimes they go missing and you end up just wasting your time looking.

We are in the same boat. We have tried it several times over the past two years and when we find the cache, the kids LOVE it and want to do more. However, we have had several trips end with nothing found and pouting kids.

We've done it few times too, just with my iPhone GPS and had mixed success! Like you, the kids LOVE it when they find the caches, they're not so keen when we can't find them... :giggle

We've had mixed success as well. We found 2 by our town's main firewall but two of the ones in the park behind our house have gone missing - we knew where they were exactly because my BIL and his family introduced us to geocaching by finding those a few years ago.

We were planning a geocaching party for both my boys, but there wasn't a dry weekend in May - thunderstorms every weekend it seemed.

We're just waiting for the twins to get a bit older. It's definitely on the to do list!

We go all the time!!! My boys LOVE it!! We even drove up to Wisconsin last summer to drop off a trackable. Now that sports are over we will be going out a lot more again!!

We have our geocaching backpack that holds "treasures" to trade, a pen, bug spray, wipes and a few other things in it! It is always ready to go!!!

We do it on and off, esp good if we are camping. Lots of easier ones around town here and in mearby national parks. We have found it takes us to interesting spots that we would never have discovered without geocaching. Although we don't do as much in summer, good chance of disturbing snakes or spiders (and one even warned of a vicious possum living in the same hole as the cache - having been munched by a possum before, we weren't going near that one!)

We've never tried, but my sister does it all the time. I want to go on one Geocatching adventure so badly!

I've never actively went looking for one, but my hubby spends a lot of time hiking, biking, boat, etc. He has stumbled upon them numerous times. I don't know how even sees that stuff. My eyes are always on the trail so I don't trip. LOL!

My husband did it once with a group of friends and said it was really fun. It was one with a bunch of puzzles and there were teams competing or something. He is hoping the group will do it again. Me? I have a hard enough time keeping up with the hobbies I already have. lol

We've done quite a few in the past but it's been over a year I think since we've found a new one. We have quite a few good ones in our own town which helped us a lot when we were getting started. The first two times we went out though it took us FOREVER to find one. We didn't know what we were looking for and I thought that they would all be buried in the ground. LOL! My boys love when we find the ones with toys inside and they get to trade for. :)

We found one a few weeks ago that we had looked for last year (for hours and finally gave up). Our 7 year old found it this year and was pretty proud of himself for being the first to find it!!!

We had a trackable of our own but it went MIA :(

I am hoping that we can come up with something creative and actually place a cache in our neighborhood. The boys keep asking!!

I checked the log the other day after you posted the website and saw several in town that people have found within the last month, so maybe it has picked up again here. We will definitely go again and try to find some recent finds.
