Do you follow any healthy eating diet? I did Whole 30 and then Paleo for 3 months now. I have had my cheats specially lately, so I need to go back to even doing Whole 30. Any good recipes that are healthy that you follow and love? Any other healthy plans you are following?

I cut out wheat and followed a low carb plan for over a year. I lost some weight and then gained it back. I need to pay closer attention to calorie intake. I am including a bit of whole grain wheat into my diet, will still eat lots of veggies, some fruit and lean proteins. I don't eat much junk food, just the occasional treat and am not going to eat as much avocado, nuts and bacon as I was. I want to eat a lot more greens and am finding ways to make veggies more interesting. Last week I mixed sliced beets with organic greens and feta cheese and loved it. I like mixing chopped cauliflower with potato salad and steamed cauliflower with mashed potatoes. This wk we are at our trailer on vacation so am going to make nachos on the BBQ with shredded cheese, ground turkey/lean beef, olives and tomatoes. This will be a fun afternoon treat.

Because I'm an empty nester at this point, the challenge is cooking for one and only buying enough fruits and vegetables at a time so that I don't have to throw stuff away. I am kind of burnt out on salads anymore and find I'd rather pan saute fresh veggies to eat with fish or chicken for dinner.

Avocados and nuts are good for you, so don't cut them out. You are better cutting bad carbs like bread, pasta AND potatoes. Sweet potatoes are good for you, but the regular potatoes do nothing for your vitamin/minerals intake. I know sad, because they are so darn good!

Freeze them, freeze your extra fruits.

Yes, the freezer is your best friend when you're cooking for one! Or when there's a good sale on veg you love. ;)

I normally try to watch my calories (mostly unsuccessfully) but I run enough to maintain. Since I'm not currently running, I've cut carbs significantly, which is something I can't normally do (need the carbs to fuel the running). I'm down a few, but nothing too exciting.

I really want a Blizzard, though. :rofl

So, lemme ask you low carb folks - what happens when you 'cheat'? Is it just like cheating on a low-cal diet? Just get back on the next day or whatever? Or does cheating 'break' it? I know it takes a few days to detox and stop feeling like crap, and now that I'm there I don't want to break it, but I need a treat!!! LOL

I cut my sugar out last year and while I have introduced a little bit back into my diet I haven't gone back to the wholesale sweet gorging of the bad old days. Apart from that all i can manage as a healthy eating plan is lots of salads in Summer. Winter is bad for me because lovely warm comfort food is what the family want to eat... and its winter here now so ..... not much healthy eating here!

I need to go sleep now...answering here would mean I have to admit that I'm not doing the right thing....I'll come back tomorrow and fess up to my chocolate binge (and ice cream, and bread, and ...well,...you know )

When I cheat I feel like crap! Last night we ate out and they must have done my salmon in butter (even though I asked no butter) because I was up until 2am!
When I am doing Whole 30, I didn't cheat but if you do, then you need to start the next day as Day #1, no matter how far you were in your 30 days. With Paleo after a cheat you also feel like crap, but you just keep going the next day. It takes at least 48 hrs for my body to start feeling better after a cheat. Cheats for me are: grains (specially corn), dairy, starches, sugar or legumes.

My problem with the avocado and nuts is that I over-indulge. I need to cut them out of my diet right now until I drop a few lbs and get my calorie count back in line. I don't eat a lot of starch, I only eat potatoes once or twice a week and often have sweet potatoes. I don't each bread much either, maybe once or twice a week.

I'm not sure what it means to 'break' a diet, if you aren't referring to feeling like crap. The only way out of that is to go back on the diet. What else would you do?

Well I don't know, I know low carb puts you in ketosis or whatever, so I wasn't sure if it was WORSE to cheat and screw that up than if I just ate too many calories, you know?

when I have grains or dairy or processed foods, or legumes or sugar, I not only feel like crap, but I feel sluggish... I actually have more energy and more focus when I don't "cheat"... but I hate using the word diet or cheat... because I do it because it helps my ADHD and makes me feel good... not for the weight loss, though that's a nice perk too

When we are focused on staying healthy (which has not been so much lately, sad to say), we typically use the Michi ladder as a guideline for food choices. That seems to work the best for us as a family.

For me is no grains, no sweetners, no legumes, no dairy. I never noticed how badly those things were affecting me.

That's why we eat insane amounts of sweet potatoes. LOL!!!

Never heard of it, I will google it!

Not all low-carb diets aim to put (or keep) you in ketosis, but keto diets generally don't calorie-count at all, so the only way to 'cheat' would be to knock yourself out of keto, and if you do that, then you just get back to it.

Dalis, Here's a link to a pdf of the different tiers.
http://www.decidetostayfit.com/michis-ladder.pdf

Essentially, the higher the tier (tier 1 being the highest), the healthier the foods. Generally speaking, a diet with mostly foods from tiers 1 and 2, with a few tier 3 foods would be a pretty healthy, satisfying, and easy to follow approach to eating. No real rules, per se. Simply make good choices, watch portioning, and use the tiers as a guide.

I got some good advice from my trainer before. Eat breakfast, eat more carbs (if you want them) at breakfast and lunch but not dinner or night time snacking. When you do eat carbs, make sure you eat a protein with it.
