I've now been tasked with helping to throw a birthday party for a very dear friend of mine next Friday. What have I gotten myself into?!?!?!? The place where the party is has been taken care of, I'm making and printing the birthday banner, but is it rude to invite people and just let them know to bring a finger food/appetizer??? I wouldn't have a problem with it but some people may think it rude to ask people to bring a food and/or present.

Also, any ideas as to a theme for a 51 year old woman who likes to have fun? We are thinking about a western party, Hawaiian, or a camo party since she loves to ride on ATVs!

I don't think a potluck birthday party would be rude at all. It sounds like a fun time is in store! :)

Where I live, it's common to have potluck parties. Most of my friends and family would ask if they could bring something anyway. I just try to convey that it's OK if someone can't bring something, and I will be grateful if they can.

Nah, I don't think it's rude to ask people to bring food or booze either! I like your theme ideas, Mel! Sounds like a lot of fun! My mom is turning 60 this year so I'm thinking of doing a 60s party - lots of decorations and music from the 60s. My own parties usually involve karaoke. :)
