I swam as a kid, but I was never great at it. In my teens and early 20's I had two bad incidents that were scary for me, so since then I will only swim in water that I can stand up in. One incident was in a lake where I swam far beyond my ability (to keep up with the other kids) and by the time I pulled myself to shore, I was vomiting from swallowing water. The other incident was water rafting with a guide and the whole raft flipped over and we all fell out.
My kids love to play in the water, but they've barely had any swimming lessons. Unless they are practicing swimming with my husband, he makes them wear life vests. It's safe, but not really helping them to become swimmers. I hope we work on getting them to really swim (with proper technique) more this summer.
