I decided to do the fun Christmas book basket idea that has been floating around. If you haven't seen it... you gather up and wrap 25 Christmas books and let your kids open one per day in December. So, I gathered up our Christmas books and then bought a bunch more. I still need five more books, which I am going to buy today and sneak into the basket. My amazon cart is ready. Give me your suggestions for your favorite holiday stories!

I don't really do holiday books. :lol We have a lot of Jesus' birth type books for kids, but that's about it.

That being said, we had a Precious Moments Christmas book growing up that I loved. It had several different Christmas stories in it, but I can't remember what the name of it was.

Oh, I just thought of something. Do your kids have favorite characters? I know when we go to the library Ryan always picks at least two seasonal type books (as in fall/summer/winter/spring) that feature some of his favorite characters.

Ooooh I loove this idea and still am waiting for a few to come and I need to sneak more in too too! Please share your list, Laura! ♥

This is our stack so far (some aren't christmas per se but more wintry):

Twas the Night Before Christmas (we have a fabric one we bought at an old school rummage sale..there are so many different good ones)
How The Grinch Stole Christmas
The Mitten
Home for Christmas
The Wild Christmas Reindeer
Gingerbread Baby
The Polar Express
Joseph's Christmas Story
Mary's Christmas Story
The Crippled Lamb
Dream Snow
Olive, The Other Reindeer
The Snowman's Song
A Wish to Be a Christmas Tree
Fancy Nancy Splendiferous Christmas

Cat in the Manger
Elf on the Shelf
Frosty
Snowmen at Christmas
The Berenstain Bears and the Joy of Giving
The Sweet Smell of Christmas (this book was actually MINE as a kid and very well loved. i wrapped up it for them even though it's tattered. i noticed it has been re-released this year. the scratch and sniff is so fun.)
Santa Mouse (awesome fun tradition here too)
The First Christmas one of our all-time fav reason for the season books

I LOVE this thread! We love collecting Christmas/Holiday stories and add to our stash every year~

Here's a few that we have that haven't been mentioned yet. . .

Mooseltoe, hilarious! I LOVE this book!
Snowmen at Night, (you've got to have both of these book! the kids love finding the hidden images on each page!)
Room For a Little One
Who's That Knocking on Christmas Eve? (we have SEVERAL of Jan Brett's books! they are awesome!)
The 12 Bugs of Christmas, my kids have worn this pop-up book out!
Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree, a classic must have~
Christmas Oranges, this book always reminds my kids of the many things they have to be thankful for each day.
The Christmas Star, by the guy who did Rainbow Fish

I had one of our parents say she is doing this for her toddler instead of candy and I thought it was a brilliant idea. May have to do this next year for my kiddos, although chapter books might be a bit expensive...mmm, pondering.

I just ordered, A Porcupine in a Pine Tree by Helaine Becker, from Scholastic as I'm going to start collecting a Christmas book per year, for my collection:)

Ooh thank you for all these suggestions! Some great picks here!!

What a GREAT idea! I admit, we don't do any kind of countdown because I am usually overwhelmed with work, on top of all the December social and family gatherings, etc. But a book a day...now that I can handle! If only my Scholastic book club order would come in sooner! I think I'll start my countdown with the 12 days before Christmas. Much more manageable for me! :) Thanks for all the book ideas! I'm definitely going to check these all out!

We've done this for the last few years. Here are a few we have that haven't been mentioned:

These are the new ones for this year. I've been cleaning out the younger books so I needed to replace them.
Angelina Christmas (Rory is a big Angelina fan)
Auntie Claus
The Wild Christmas Reindeer
Shaoey & Dot and the Christmas Miracle

And then a few we already had:
The Berenstein Bears and the Joy of Giving
God Gave Us Christmas
Fancy Nancy Splenderfirous Christmas (Rory ADORES Fancy Nancy)
Legend of the Candy Cane
This is the Stable (this one is probably for the younger ones)
The Little Drummer Boy
