Today:
Veterans Day is an official United States holiday that honors people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I (major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect).

As an Air Force Veteran, and daughter of a Navy man, I am proud to be involved in this holiday and salute you who are serving, have served and are children and parents of those in armed forces! :heartslub

oh yes! thank you for starting this dear thread anne! and thank you to you, anne, and to all that have served (and to all the families). we have many family members who have served ... and my son is hoping for an AF career one day as well.

my little story for the day:
my fave marine, my Dad, served in vietnam. he signed up bc he feared he would end up drafted anyway. as we know it was a very controversial war & he never heard the words "Welcome Home" when he landed back on US soil ... instead he quietly tried to slip back into his old life, changed, but grateful to be home. 2 years ago, while grabbing coffee, a random stranger said the words " Welcome Home Soldier" to him after a brief conversation that had together at the coffee station in a convenience store. he said when he made it back to his car, he sat stunned for awhile. he realized he never, ever heard those words before. now ... i make sure to tell him every veteran's day "welcome home soldier". :heartslub

Thanks to you, Anne, and all of the others who serve and/or have served AND YOUR FAMILIES for your sacrifice!!

We have Remembrance day here as well - I spend the day with tears in my eyes thinking of all the selfless men and women who served. Thanks you to all - and I'm glad that your Dad is getting the recognition he deserves Jenn - Vietnam vets were treated so poorly everywhere...

Awe...this thread is making me tear up a bit. First, thank you Anne (never knew you were a vet!), and thank you to all of those who have served, are serving, and family of those as well! Second - Jenn - your story brings me to tears. So sad that he didn't here that when he came home, but so glad that someone was kind and thoughtful and caring enough to meet him and say that!

We are big fans of Veteran's Day here-- My dad was in the Navy (stationed with the Marines, as a hospital corpsman in Da Nang, Vietnam from 1965-68. My brother enlisted in the Marines right out of high school, and was in the Marine Corps Band-- stationed in North Carolina. My husband was a Naval Flight Officer in training when we met, and we spent the first 6 years of our marriage with him in Active duty. My brother got out of the Marines, went to college, got married, and decided to go to Army ROTC and is now stationed in South Korea- Camp Casey.
I am so thankful that my loved ones have survived their tours of duty, and I am so grateful to those who served and gave their lives as the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Thanks, US Veterans!
