Pacifier Weaning - Advice Please

when my youngest turned 3 we took him to build a bear and he put the binky inside-he could hold the bear and feel the binky in there-he never cried for it just cuddled the bear!! we talked to him about a week or so before

I feel the same way sweetie, I hate hate hate messing with their sleep! My own feeling is that if you needed braces than there's a good chance they will too, so I dunno. I'd probably just let it be, but I'm wussy. LOL! ;) Let us know what you end up doing! :)

I like that idea Colleen. How sweet. :heartslub

Yeah - you know. At the end of June my DH has a business trip and my parents are taking my oldest on a mini vacation so it will just be me and my little guy. I think I'm going to try the cutting the top approach. I'll for sure come back and let you know how it goes. Maybe if that doesn't work, I'll try the build a bear because I think that is awfully sweet.

ditto karah.. i just chucked those bad boys in the trash.. He had no choice LOL. and like she said.. they won't cry forever ;)

We haven't had a pacifier baby yet, but our oldest was a thumb-sucker and one day when I was browsing through a catalog I came across this:

We decided to give it a try because I really didn't want to go the whole "hot-sauce" on the thumb route and it worked like a charm (he was two). :yippee Of course, we did get a lot of comments from people asking what was wrong with his hand because of the colored bracelets that you use to fasten it on. I will say that you have to stick it out the whole month, even if it seems like it works after just two weeks because we quit and then had to start again because the thumb started going back in his mouth. They do have a version for finger-suckers too.

My youngest sister was a "pluggy" girl, and my dad cut the top off of it, but then caved in at 2 or 3 in the morning and went to the store to buy another one. She wouldn't take it though because it wasn't "her" pluggy so that was the end of it for her.

Cut a hole in the top of it and tell him it's broken. That did the trick for my son.

Thanks for all the advice everyone.

Heather, I'm with you. He only uses it in the crib and he has been such a good sleeper since he was a baby, I feel so bad taking it away and making him cry. He doesn't wake up at night and ask for it except on the odd occasion. It just seems like such a simple thing for a little comfort in the crib. It's the dentist that wants it gone - I guess his front teeth are starting to buck out a bit. You know, I needed braces and my kids probably will too so I'm thinking is it really that big a deal? :pffft

Ok - I'm just making excuses aren't I? I hate messing with their sleep, even if for a couple days. I'm a wuss.

My oldest was a terrible sleeper from the get go and I threw that darn pacifier away at around 6 months of age because he'd cry every time the darn thing fell out of his mouth.

Just to let you know, braces cost us $4,000.00. Something to consider. I don't have anything to offer. None of mine took it even though I tried several times desperately to give it to them, lol. Good luck sweetie.

So - I have an update. I finally decided to get serious about getting rid of the binkie. I chose this week because my oldest son and hubby are away so I thought if my little guy cries a lot, it will only be me that has to bare it. LOL

Anyway, I cut a hole in the top of the pacifier last night and gave it to him like I usually do, pretending nothing was wrong.

He sort of looked it over, ran his finger over the hole, stuck it in his mouth, pulled it back out ... looked at it again ... stated "binkie has a hole" about 5 times (just matter of factly - not upset at all), threw it on the floor and fell fast asleep without it. :yesss

I'm hoping tonight goes as smoothly :)
