Order you keep your kits on drive

i know we have this type discusion all over, might we someday have a category for organizing stash?

I lost my hard drive and don't want to put all crap i had back on.
I do have Lily back on, but in no order yet, other then the back up series of
(puter still indexing drive of it, and it been days)
If you were to start from fresh, what would you do?
or what is working for you now
I know before, I did not like having the templates in with the kits (independent templates), as it brought up pngs in all searches

So i know i want lily_template separate from the kits (not gonna break up any within bundles or collections), just the monthly or purchased templates out together

do i have cu separate , along with basic thingies?

I have papers, but no elements, and visa-versa - do i keep them separte to know

I am so discouraged
doing series backups i have everything there to get back, but putting parts back together is gonna take a lifetime
(i left scrapping for 3 yr when lost hp, i don't want that to happen

oh i want that.. but to get there??
byoc/m3/mpm - in there designer? for addons? main go where?
things of yours and paula, not in store, together with what in store?

I do like Liz...by designer. Most the time I put byoc pieces with their designer. MPM I treat as a designer. So one of my folders is named mpm. Inside that folder I keep the each month in its own folder labeled with the year and month. The American could be done for byoc/pad collars/m3.

Lots of times since I have space I just duplicate collars to both designers folders. Easier for me to find that way.

Oh and organization is always a work in progress so don't let it overwhelm you. I have things from my crash a year ago that still haven't sorted back to where they go, but that doesn't keep me from creating.

I do what @mrspotts I treat M3/MPM as their own designers. I also do this with BYOC.
I combine old and new stuff together. But I also don't participate in a lot of challenges so I don't need to keep track of what is in the store or not.

This is how I do it... external hard drive --> Digi --> Store Name --> Designer Name --> kit
For the MPM and M3, I do have a separate folder under the store name, and then I do those by month. I put the add-ons and the kit into the folder by month.

I keep my stash by designer, except for Lily pad and two other stores - they get store>designer.

Every time I download a new kit, I clean up the folder to remove TOU and extra things... then I copy a preview to a "previews" folder - which is unsorted other than that... I don't change file names or anything, so the previews are just however the designer names their files (except for "folder"... i change those to however they name their actual papers/elements... I usually have to change Danyale's or Jaimee's... Etc_dan_nameofkit)
Because designers typically keep their same file naming structure, all my Etc by Danyale previews would be together in that folder when sorted alphabetically...

If I like a preview of hers for a project, I know then to go to my Lilypad folder, then Etc by Danyale folder, then find her stuff.

After my preview has been copied to the previews folder, I copy the files to my backup EHD (which mirrors my main EHD in file structure), and then I move the downloaded goodies to the correct place on my hard drive.

My templates are not stored in with the designers... templates are in a template folder, sorted by number of photo spots. It took me FOREVER to get them sorted, but it has made my searches for templates so much less time consuming. I now delete all the pngs, because I can easily pull them out of the layers if I needed to for any reason. This would depend on the program you're using to scrap, if this would be helpful for you... like craft artist (I think) needs the pngs...

I agree, we need an organization pad! :giggle

I agree with Sara - how do you scrap? Do you start with a story or a photo? Do you start by colors? do you look for templates by photo spots?

I also keep M3 and MPM together... including add ons, in one month folders.

CU I haven't figured out yet. For now it's in with designers that sold it, but I'm contemplating a second hard drive, or second supply folder in my hard drive. Haven't decided!

BYOC goes in each individual designer... ideally, my previews folder would have the BYOC tags, but I haven't gone back in to tag them yet :( They are tagged in my PSE Organizer, but I don't use that as often as I thought. I should... but it's a change in my process I've not gotten used to yet.

For me, I like seeing my kits all in one place. That's what works for me, because that's how I scrap. My EHDs have only a few main folders: Templates, Kits, Layouts, Previews (where I have tagged kit previews that are named by kit and designer), and "Extras." I also have an Excel spreadsheet where I list every kit I've purchased (I have a separate spreadsheet for templates). The spreadsheet lets me know at a quick glance if I've purchased something so I don't have to plug in an EHD to check there; this is nice because I didn't start my Previews folder until this year, and while I'm going through my EHD and adding old previews, it's definitely not complete. Plus I can arrange the spreadsheet alphabetically by kit name or designer or store, or by "misc," so I can see all BYOC items at a glance. Speaking of BYOC: I have a folder for each month named BYOC YYYY-MM, and inside of it is a shortcut to each item I've purchased for that BYOC. The item itself is in its own folder in the KITS folder. I got the idea for a shortcut from @lorryfach awhile back. It works really well because I'm not keeping stuff in two places and it makes sure that I see all coordinating items.

Anyway, I just like having kits arranged alphabetically in my Kits folder. For me, arranging by store didn't make sense cuz stores close or are renamed. And designers retire or rename themselves or move stores, so arranging that way didn't work for me, either. I just like to easily find a kit. But it makes for a big Kits folder lol and can take time to load. Plus I can remember kit names but I can't always remember where I bought something or which designer made it. Plus what do you do with a collab? Do you write "Collab: Designer XX and Designer ZZ"? I just overthink things lol. Having all the kits in one place means I can easily see all previews, which lets me quickly find colors/styles I want.

On my laptop I have my "to back up to EHDs" folder. Once stuff in there is backed up, I either delete it off my laptop or move it to its corresponding folder on my HD. I try to keep only stuff I plan on using in the near future on my laptop.

I'm all for simple. Designer > Kit/Template

All items that go together go into the same folder (elements, papers, JC's, etc). Templates get their own folder. MPM/M3/Subscription main kits get their own folder - listed as TLP as the designer. BYOC and any subscription Add On's get their own folder under specific designer. Usually folder names look like TLP_ForeverJoy_Lost, or TLP_MPM_Discover_Aug16 or TLP_AmberLaBau_HideSeek_MPMAug16

I import to iPhoto on a Mac, so the folders that I have on my computer are filed the same way, but in Albums, in iPhoto. I use the Previews as the Main Album Cover, and scroll through them all.

Okay, I admit it, I have favorite designers. So a favorite designer has her own folder and within, each kit has its own folder. I also put the alpha from a kit in their own folder, named "Alpha - name of kit".

For less favorites, I have a folder for the store and then I name my kit folders with the initials of the designer first, like this: JJ - kit name, LBW - kit name, ETC - kit name, ... That way, I know what kits are in that store so I can do challenges. It also groups a designer's kits together. I start all blog hops (or other multi-designer themes) as BH - name of hop.

I always save the kit previews in the kit folders so I can probably credit.

Lastly, I have my templates in a separate location, sorted by designer for my favorites and one "Other" folder for the rest. I do often rename by templates so the number of photos is first. That way all the one photo, then 2 photo, etc. sort together. I use templates a lot.

I have a folder for the store (TLP) then by designer and all go in there... M3 has a seperate folder and then by month ... Designer add ins for m3 go in the m3 month not split out. Also collabs for special TLP collection is a folder too not split. I do not split out templates... Example templates for monthly challenge are under the designer who made it.

I have a folder for the store (TLP) then by designer and all go in there This is how I do it... external hard drive --> Store Name --> Designer Name --> kit

I have a TLP folder and inside are the designers' folders. BYOC is a folder and MPM another, I treat them as collabs. Then I also have a TLP store collabs folder. That's all I do for organization.

Same as most of the above.; File by store, then inside folder sorted by designer. But every month I have a Byoc folder. When that month is over I move the kits into the folder of whatever designer made it. I also have a folder called Lp Retired. (Sissy Sparrows among others are there, because I still want to use their kits, and it is easier to remember, because I know they were here at the pad. ) All templates is in a Photoshop template file -don't do that. -it's a mess LoL
Cath don't stress over it. Do it slowly, for now just backup, everything, then sort your Ehd bit by bit.

thank you guys... wonderful future ideas

my search in windows not working anymore

i am uncertain in all lily came back on, haven't pinpoint yet.
my hyperlinks in spread sheet no longer work, must hold the drive ID in them, for the path of them the same
