Welcome to week four of the October Art Journal Muse. This month, we have been exploring our four major senses, taste, touch, hearing and sight. This week, we are looking at the sense of taste.

I don't really need to explain the sense of taste but here a few ideas on how you can art journal about taste (with help from Gemini).

The Five Flavors: Dedicate a page or spread to each of the basic tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami.
  • Visuals: Use a vibrant color palette for sweet (pinks, reds, yellows), a sharp or contrasting one for sour (bright greens, electric yellows), earthy tones for bitter (dark browns, greens), etc.
  • Collage: Use pictures of foods that represent each taste.
  • Texture: Use different materials to represent the textures associated with each (e.g., bumpy cardstock for crunchy/salty, smooth paint for sweet/creamy).
Taste of Nostalgia: Focus on a favorite childhood meal or dish (like Grandma's cookies or a specific birthday cake).
  • Prompt: Write about the emotions and memories that this taste evokes. What does it feel like to taste it?
  • Art: Use photos or visuals of the person who made it, or the setting where you ate it. Use colors that match the feeling of the memory (warm and comforting, bright and exciting, etc.).
A Food Critique: Choose a food item—a piece of fruit, a square of chocolate, a new dish—and conduct a mindful tasting exercise.
  • Writing: Describe the initial taste, the secondary flavors, the aftertaste, and the texture. Try describing it without using the words for the five basic flavors. Use figurative language ("tastes like a summer afternoon," "as sharp as a needle").
  • Art: Create an abstract visualization of the experience. Use lines and shapes to represent the sensation on your tongue. For example, a sharp, quick line for spicy, or a soft, sprawling wash of color for creamy.
Favorite Tastes
  • Writing: Create a list of your favorite tastes or describe a favorite food in detail. What is the first taste? Where does the flavor hit on your tongue? What sounds do you hear as you chew (crunch, squish, fizz)? What is the texture inside? What is the aftertaste?
  • Art: This is where you can use expressive marks and colors to visualize the sensation of flavor. A burst of flavor can be a scribble of a vibrant color.

Challenge requirements:
  • Create a layout with a"taste" theme.
  • Your creation can be all digital or hybrid.
  • As always you need to include TLP products on your page and meet the requirements to post in the TLP gallery - Layouts must contain at least 50% TLP products; Uploads must be less than 250k; List all credits; no off-site linking allowed.
  • Please post your layout to the Art Journaling Gallery prior to Midnight EST 2 November 2025 and then post it in this thread. (Directions below on adding layout to this thread.)
We will draw a winner at the beginning of next month for a coupon!! Every page you create is equal to one entry in the random draw. So, if you create 1 page you are entered once, if you create 2 pages you are entered 2 times and so on. (Maximum of four entries.)

How to add a linked layout to this thread:Once you have uploaded your layout to the gallery, scroll down to the bottom of the page. Under "Share this Media" you will see the text "Copy GALLERY BB code". Right below that you will see two rectangle boxes with text to the right. Click the two rectangles and that will copy the text to your clipboard. You can then paste the text in to this thread.
