Hello bookies! I need your help!

It seems like sooooo many of the popular books these days are in series. But after trudging my way through 3 books in Game of Thrones I'm exhausted from the long-term commitment. I just want to be friends with a story - not marry it and have it's babies :giggle

So hit me up with some of your favourite "single" books! They can be old favourites or new stuff. I'm just looking for a bunch of ideas so I can build a nice reading list to work through this year.

I'm open to anything . .. fantasy, sci-fi, mysteries/thrillers, historical fiction, old classics . . . only thing I don't really like are pure romance novels.

Thanks for your help!

I like Patricia Cornwell, they seem like they go fast and keep my attention. Same with John Grisham. Nicholas Sparks if I feel like sobbing like an idiot.

I just finished Grapes of Wrath. I thought I had read this in school, but apparently not. It was really good!

If you like long book... Light a Penny Candle by Maeve Binchy was really good... actually I've like all of hers that I've read so far.

Pope Joan is an older book that I thought was very unique and very interesting... kind of historical fiction.

These Is My Words. Wonderful book... especially if you love to read. It's not a long book, just really good! (pioneer times)

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak was really good too! (holocast time, but not concentration camp stuff)

If you like fast young adult type stuff, I read Okay for Now by Gary D. Schmidt and loved that one too. It's about the struggles of a teenage boy I think in the 70s?

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is a sci-fi book that I really loved.

If you want funny... The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella was hilarious!

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd is one of my favorites that I've read several time. Very moving... great characters.

The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory is historical fiction about Henry the VIII times... LOVED that one. This book got me hooked on historical fiction!

K, that ought to tide you over for about a year! LOL! :)

ooh i think i read a nicholas sparks one last year ,was really good but then i predicted the ending

Anything Nicholas Sparks! He is awesome! But more than likely you will end up crying or heartbroken :(

Anything by Sarah Dessen (Keeping the Moon=AMAZING), Debbie Macomber :)

If anyone has a Kindle, I know a really awesome FB Page for free books :)

thanks for the great suggestions everyone!
i went to the used book store last night and had this thread open on my iphone for guidance :)

I just recently read two good non-fiction books:

The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Both are good.

Jeannette Walls' The Glass Castle is really good too.

One I read a few months ago that was light & fun... The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

I just read:

The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sara Addison Allen kind of a sweet/quick read
The Uncoupling by Meg Wolitzer
11/22/63 by Stephen King - loved this (but I love all of his books) it is interesting thinking about time travel
The Truth-Teller's Lie by Sophie Hannah- suspenseful and kept me reading it straight through, but kind of a rough topic
The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender - weird but interesting
Last Night at the Lobster by Stewart O'Nan - about the closing night of a Red Lobster with interesting characters
The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides - I read about half way before having to return it. It is kind of slow, but now I wonder how it ended

Oooh... and a really really good suspense-type book is

Before I Go to Sleep by SJ Watson. That was one I read straight through too.
