What’s the earliest news story/historical event you remember hearing first hand growing up? I remember when Pope John Paul II became pope. I was six. That’s the first thing that comes to mind.

I’m impressed you remember anything from when you were six! I definitely do not haha

I wasn't very news aware when I was young but I remember the late 70's, the Vietman war ended, Jaws was a huge blockbuster movie and Patty Hearst was kidnapped and then became a wanted criminal.

Oh, I remember Patty Hearst too. That story was wild.

But the first thing that comes to mind is the energy crisis in early 70's & that you couldn't fill up your car. I'm sure there's an English word here, but I'm not sure. Also, too early in the morning for me to even know it in Swedish, hence I can't look it up. LOL But ... you were not allowed to buy as much gas as you wanted, and there where infomercials on the telly about this. Probably remember it cuz it was a cartoon, and in the 70s in Sweden, cartoons was not very common. Also, I'm sure my dad was really upset about this.

Also I remember when our last king died. It was weird cuz it was news on the telly all day. This wasn't common in Sweden in the 70s either - TV was broadcasted between 5.30pm to about 11pm, and only 2 channels. (And the dinosaurs roamed the earth ....) At the same time as the king was sick at the hospital, it was a huge bank heist with a hostage situation, and the news jumped back and forth. This is the hostage situation that gave us the term Stockholm Syndrome.

I was never that interested in the news.
I know that South Africa was known for Dr Chris Barnard doing the first heart transplant. (1967) I was small.
I know we experienced an earthquake in 1972, I felt that one.
I remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard Princess Diana had died.

The assassination of John F Kennedy. I was in 2nd grade and home sick that day. Mom had the tv on in the living room and I was on the couch. We were in a very small house and she was in the kitchen and came running in when Walter Cronkite interrupted for the news break.

I remember Sally Ride and then a couple years later Challenger, with the teacher aboard. (I think Christina McAuliffe). We watched that in school on the VHS. Sad.

ETA: I was approx 9 for Sally Ride and 12 for the Challenger.

An odd one that I remember is when Bell Telephone broke up into smaller companies... my grandfather had worked for Bell.

Meh, that was rural growing up for me! I remember that one of our stations had a sign off, and then would go to those lines.

I remember the Challenger shuttle exploding. :(

I remember that! I was 5, but my mom was really into it, so she was watching all about it. She made a scrapbook about it and kept the newspaper clippings.

I think the earliest news I can remember is when Mt. St. Helen's blew up. I was 9 then.

We didn't watch a lot of news growing up, or at least, I was unaware of it. I remember the Smuckers birthday wishes on the Today Show by Willard Scott, but I don't know how old I was. It was just background noise.

I think one of the big ones that I remember besides the Challenger, was the green nighttime images of the Gulf War on tv. I was 10-11, and it fascinated me that technology could show me that. Especially since we still had a party line* at my house at that time!

*party line: multiple houses/properties have the same number, so neighbors can pick up the phone and listen in. We had four properties on the line - us, the barn, and 2 neighbors.

Now imagine sitting around a tv watching live images of a man walking on the moon. Did that in 1969.

I can remember the 1984 presidential election results. I just remember that Ronald Regan reminded me of my grandpa, so I wanted him to win (totally based on appearance... I had ZERO political opinion). I was in kindergarten at the time.

Living in Seattle, I definitely remember Mt. St. Helens erupting (we had ash). They sold little bubbles of ash in the vending machines. I also remember my mom sssshhhing me when they were airing Charles and Diana's wedding. My earliest non newsworthy memory is at age 3 attending pre-school.
