NaturaL disasters and evacuating?!|patter 09.12.2018

Trees are my biggest fear at the moment, as we have a wooded backyard that is very close to the house.
This is my ongoing fear with most storms, especially when high winds are predicted. My mom asked if I could take the day off work if it got bad and they didn't close school and I told her that if a tree is going to fall on my house, I'd rather not be home!

I've never had to evacuate, but have had vacations plans change because of hurricanes. I do have lots of friends and family in the path of Florence and most of them are getting out! I'm a little concerned about the condo that my family owns at Myrtle Beach, but it's property and no one is there thank goodness.

@jenevang -- Is Florence coming your way now? I see the path has really shifted south once it comes ashore....

We are pretty far inland in GA but still in the "red bubble" on the hurricane map (I use the Red Cross Hurricane Tracker so it's red, LOL). The eye will get close to us if it stays on this path but it'll be just a storm by then... That usually means we will get lots of rain, loss of power and tornadoes. My biggest concern is trees. so.many.trees.

Of course, I'm still praying the whole thing decreases in intensity for the sake of those on the coast. I've lived through a few in Savannah and when we lived in FL and they are no fun at all! Except when I was young and actually cheered a college football game in the middle of Hugo. #truestory

All those storms and hurricanes looked so scary - I hope it is way less destructive than is predicted...

We live way inland and far away from tropical storms so no evacuation for storms needed but we do get bushfires. We had a major bushfire when I was 9 months pregnant with Henry, the sky turned blood red for the day, scariest thing I have ever seen...
Canberra is called the bush capital, trees and parklands everywhere, we live so close to the geographic centre of the city but we had to be prepared to evacuate when the fires came that day - had the car packed and ready to go. Only 5 homes were lost in our suburb (from over 400 overall that day), we were lucky that the main camp area for all the firefighters, water helicopters and fire trucks were literally one block from our house so that made us feel safer. Our daughter had nightmares for months afterwards - she was 6 at the time.

Stay safe everyone xx

We were up here on the G.C when that fire wall raged. My father in-law was the duty manager at The Southern Cross Club in Woden when that fire hit and set up an evacuation area inside for people and their pets that were displaced. It was pretty horrendous, two friends of ours lost their houses but thankfully they managed to get themselves and the pets out before the fire wall hit them.

I hope everyone stays safe during the hurricane, thinking of those affected.

Oh wow, I remember it like it was yesterday. Scariest day of my life. We are at the cinema at Woden when they evacuated it and I went to get my grandparents in Holder but it was too late - I was blocked by a wall of flames. I had to turn around not yet knowing that my cousin managed to get to them a few minutes before and gotten them out, brushing the embers out of Grandma's hair as he threw her in the car. Driving through that firestorm with birds dropping dead out of the sky and trees exploding around me - well.

Stay safe with the hurricane, everyone.

I grew up in Central Florida & watching Hurricanes was pretty normal. We never were super affected by them. Andrew sent some tornadoes through our town.

We are in far western North Carolina. We'll probably get lots of rain, wind and we might lose power (we usually do with any kind of wind). We have 2 - 5 gallon jugs of water, water bottles, we'll fill up our bathtubs, we have our pantry packed with food, etc... I think we are prepared as much as we can be.

Sandy was the worst to hit our area, and we still see the remnants and re-building going on 8 years later.
Sandy was scary, and I was a few hours north of you! I remember watching the tv waiting to see what the final path would be - NY or Boston. Watching the evacuation areas, and listening to them change back and forth. Dh had to stay at the hotel he worked at, and left me home with the dog, and toddler. I felt safer there - farther from the coast - than at his hotel.

I've never had to evacuate. We get flash flood warnings often, but that's it. We had to hunker down a few times during super snow storms as a kid, and later in Massachusetts. As a kid no power was an adventure, and we had a wood burning stove. As an adult, I was thankful the power was back quickly!

Yes, Sandy really was the first big storm to scare me. I think since it was so huge and uncertain caused me to stress even before it arrived. After was just horrible! To be separated from my DH would have even been worse! That's tough. We only separated from the kids after it hit, and sent them to family in Virginia.

I can't wait for this hurricane to be over so I can read all about how everyone is safe!

All these tornadoes /hurricanes / typhoons & natural disasters around the world seem to be increasing in frequency (or maybe I'm just seeing them on the news more than before) - feeling very fortunate after reading some of what u all have been thru! I hope Flo isn't as devastating as they first thought

we got downgraded to a tropical storm.. as a few have said it is just the flooding, tornados, power outages and the trees since we were already saturated from rain the last few weeks. Hope all will be safe.

Thanks for the update Christa. Glad you are OK so far. Hope you don't lose power and really hoping your brother's house is safe too!

Thanks Jenn.. big hugs.. watching the news I am so sad ...prayers for all in Flo’s path

We had mandatory evacuations, since we live on the coastal border where the Carolinas meet. We’re staying with my family in VA and following the storm from afar. So far all we know is that we’ve lost power.

My husband’s planning to head back in a few days to assess the situation before coming back up for me and the boys.

Today has bee a sunny humid day in Annapolis, but our ground is soaked and downtown is flooding on a regular basis with any rain these days. We're about 2 miles out from the harbor so we've always been safe and our best benefit is that we are on the same electric grid as the police station so I have almost never lost power in the 30 years in this house.

My granddaughter at UNC Wilmington was evacuated and strangely enough Dick heard/read that Raleigh NC had lost power. True @BevG ??? so far inland and such a center of colleges and hospitals.

Here in Fredericksburg, VA, about 300 miles north of Hurricane Florence, we've barely experienced it. It has been cloudy most of Friday and all day today so far, along with quite a bit of misty drizzly wetness, but hardly any actual rain.
