Last year when we moved from TX to CA we moved to a waaaaaay smaller house & donated about 2 rooms worth of furniture before moving. It was fine. Less house to clean & I haven't missed the stuff we left behind at all. Now, we are moving again. Smaller house again. Looking at what we need to give away. Again. This time I am thinking I will miss some of it. :( Neither of us really wants to pay for storage either. For example, if we put the kitchen table in storage for a year paying $30/month we could just buy a whole new table next year for the same money.

We are also losing storage & closet space again too. I filled 2 bags of clothes for Goodwill yesterday but it is hard. :hissy I am trying to convince myself to give away every item that doesn't fit but that is hard b/c I have some cute things I could wear if I lost weight.

Sorry this is SO long. I don't really know where I am going with this but I am open if anyone has advice. Even if it is just to tell me to give away more stuff. :giggle

As for your kitchen table can you take the leaf out and use it in a different space? Or take the legs off and stow it under a bed? Otherwise you're right...it doesn't make a lot of sense to put something in storage that isn't worth the cost of storage. We have lived in 2000+ sf (most with full basements) houses for most of our married life and recently moved into a <1000 sf apt. I gave a lot away, sold a bit on crags list (oh how i miss my deep freeze) but still brought a lot of stuff with us. We're lucky that there are closets galore in this place (all small but 6 total for a 2br) and a fairly sizable kitchen for a small apt. I would get rid of stuff you know there is no way you have room for but don't go crazy yet...you may be surprised at what space you can find for things even in a small space. The Container Store and IKEA are my friends for helping me come up with different ways I can stow my stuff and the Apartment Therapy blog often has cool storage ideas for small spaces. If you just can't make room for something after you move then you can still donate it or sell it later. Anyhow that's my rambling 2 cents worth. Good luck with your move.

One thing I've learned about keeping cute clothes for when I lose weight is that when I do lose weight, I usually want to go shopping for new cute things. That's half the fun of losing weight, go shopping when things actually fit. Plus stuff that I've kept usually isn't in style when I pull it out years late... Did that help? :)

Thanks you guys! Sarah, those storage tips help although I have been making daily (sometimes twice daily) trips to Goodwill. I just figure if I can live without it then I need to let it go. Clean out & make room. Karen, so true....part of the fun of losing weight is the shopping isn't it? :)

Alli - have you looked into those storage bags that you suck the air out of to conserve space - that might work for some of your belongings that you want to keep?! I don't have a whole lot of ideas other than that. :(

That's really tough - depending on how long you have before you move, maybe you could wait a bit and then look again with fresh eyes on more to donate. It's tough - I don't have any great suggestions, I'm in a similar boat myself - I don't want to do storage but I also can't bear to part with some of my favorite things!
