Today is Mom and Pop Business Owners Day! I just love mom and pop shops and restaurants and try to frequent them as often as possible. We went out to dinner at a little Italian restaurant that we love last night called Angelos. And one day this week we are going to hit up our locally owned frozen custard place since they just opened back up for the season. We have several other restaurants that are amazing. My son-in-law's family own a couple of different small shops that are so much fun to browse. My dad owned a construction company that was started by my grandfather in 1942 and it continued until his death in 2012. My dad also owned a small pharmacy before he took over the construction company.

Do you have any Mom and Pop businesses that you love to frequent?
Any small businesses in your family?
 
I love mom and pop businesses too. I live in a very urban area, so while there are definitely locally owned business, there are not many that are considered traditional mom and pop.
 
I have a favorite diner in a little town north of where I live that I love to frequent. It is the definition of Mom and Pop!
 
We have a Mexican restaurant nearby called Casa Victoria. It’s so delicious! Definitely a favorite.
No small businesses in my family.
 
We don't have any small business owners in our family, but some members are self employed at the moment and hoping to expand to become businesses.
 
Oh yes indeed! This is a good excuse to visit our favorite, Amigos, which means Friends in Spanish. You really do feel like friends when you go and eat there. Plus, the food is off-the-hook yummy!
 
Paces is the mom and pop place we miss going to since we moved away. When we go back to Utah to visit, we always have to hit up paces for a cheeseburger, fries/tots and a rainbow. A rainbow is a slushy with soft serve ice cream in it… Super yummy treat!
 
We have many independently owned family eateries here. Heartland Cafe is well known and always busy. They are a heritage home turned into a restaurant and filled with antiques/old photos, etc. The menu is good (although it is pricey). We have a Korean restaurant Rose of Sharon that people rave about. Saskatoon Farm Cafe and restaurant are both sooo good, one has fantastic coffee and desserts (lots of saskatoon berry items) and the other is a full serve restaurant with great food. Both are on the grounds of the farmland/market. It's a fun outing to go there, I try to get over there every few months. We have a few bakeries that are family owned, a perogie place just opened up and many more. Our little town is renowned for its food (as is Calgary too). No wonder I can't seem to lose weight LOL. Too many great places to eat.
 
I forgot to mention "Big Sky". If you ever go south of Calgary, stop in there (right off the highway) and you won't be dissapointed by their BBQ choices. The fellow who owns it is local and the staff work so hard to prepare the tons of food fresh every day. It's an amazing place. Aside from the beef/pork, I could go on and on about their homemade bread baked every morning, their huge pulled chicken sandwich, scalloped cheddar bacon potatoes, baked beans, cornbread, smoked bacon alfredo mac & cheese...oh...I could go on and on about this place :)
 
I love supporting local small businesses as much as possible. We do a lot of restaurants & coffee shops in our neighborhood- a good pizza place, mexican and american, plus one of the best mom & pop burger joints in the town not far! We have a couple really fun, cute shopping stores too with nick knacks and locally made/sourced goods that I love. My hubby swears by the local owned hardware store- they don't always have all the things the big box hardware/home stores have, but their customer service is SO great & one of the first places we go to for home ownership questions.

We try to do the same when we're travelling. I refuse to eat at a chain restaurant in a different town! lol
 
I worked in small family businesses as a student. Most of these types of shops around me are businesses which sell non-essentials, although not necessarily luxury goods. With the economy as it is, my spending on such items has dwindled massively. So, as much as I would like to support them, in actuality it is difficult.
