Mock exam

Hi everyone !

The week has flown by. My youngest son has been quite demanding and needed reassurance.
Next week, he’s going on a school trip with his class (that’s fine, he’s used to school trips), but he also has mock exams that same week for the national secondary school certificate, which he’ll be sitting next year.
As a pupil with special educational needs (computer, extra time), his routines are going to be disrupted and he hasn’t sat any exams under such conditions yet. So I’m trying to reassure him, help him revise and prepare some support worksheets for him.
This morning, I even woke up thinking it would be good if his computer desktop only had the icons he’ll need for the exam. But I haven’t figured out how to customise two virtual desktops in Windows 11. If anyone knows, I’d love some advice. The idea is to have Desktop 1 with the usual icons and Desktop 2 with fewer icons.

Did your children also have mock exams in the year leading up to their final exams ?

Our kids had them the year before the exam, and again the term before.
We didn't do them on computers, so can't help with that bit.

My kids never have mock exams that I’m aware of.

For the computer, I wonder if two separate profiles for the same person would work? Sign in to one for all icons; sign in to the other for less icons. I think you just need two separate log ins/emails but I’m just guessing.

I searched on Google (and asked ChatGPT), but unfortunately for me, the icons are tied to Windows. Apparently, it’s possible on Mac and Linux.
I’d thought of that – creating a new user session – but the computer my son uses for school is on loan from the local education authority, so I don’t have administrator rights to create a new user session.

My kids had "Practice SAT" tests in 8th grade and then each year leading up to their senior year before they took the SAT for real for college entrance. I liked that they had to take them before the real test so they knew what to expect and they could see their results for each practice test too. That helped them know what they needed to work on.

I think the only way to do separate desktops would be to create separate user profiles on the computer, but it sound like you can't do that for the on load computer.
