after years of telling DH i want a dslr camera, finally we have a bit of breathing room in our finances, and yesterday he pulled up a research web site and told me to see what i thought looked best for me. :yesss

i'm leaning right now towards the nikon d5200. anyone have any feedback on this? the most important thing to me (besides that we can afford it) is that it takes good action and low-light shots. i'm SOOO tired of all of my low light shots (such as Christmas, birthday parties, etc that are inside) being blurry. i'm hoping to find a camera and learn it well enough to eliminate much of this.

so, anyway, here's to HOPING!!

so I disregarded what everyone told me when i bought my dslr, which was to get a 50mm. i didn't want to because i am photographing kids that are ACTIVE and i need to zoom. also i didn't want to spend the money. guess who ate her words? yep me. although i love having my zoom, it doesn't work as well as it shoud in low light shots which i hate to say happens 75% or more with my photos. so i would HIGHLY recommend you get a 50 mm with your camera. but as a beginner i would suggest getting the kit lens to. it is nice to learn on.

If I were you I would go someplace where you can get a sense of how a Nikon or Canon feels in your hands. They are pretty different and once you choose one brand and start investing in lenses it is much more expensive to switch later. I wish I could tell you about the 5200 but I haven't kept up with the latest models. I still have my Nikon d90 from years ago and I'm happy with it. And I agree with Jewelle about a prime lens. I shoot with a prime lens 90% of the time and they are relatively inexpensive. For action shots definitely get a long zoom with VR (vibration reduction). HTH!

YAY! I hope you LOVE it. I couldn't believe the difference when I switched.

This is just my 2 cents, but I really wish I had gone with the kit lens. No one else ever says that, but I feel a need to zoom a LOT. I have an 85-200 mm lens that takes GREAT photos, but I have to get ffffffaaaaaarrrrrrr away to get anyone in the picture. And then I have a 35 mm, which takes great pictures, too, but it's useless at sporting events. I borrowed a friend's kit lens, and the pictures were just as good, I could zoom AND I could get a good portrait. So maybe it's just me, but that's my story.

we have the canon 550D and have had the 85-200mm lens which is a great multipurpose lens - very good for sporting shots. I recently gave my husband the 50mm lens and it is on all the time now - the photos we are getting are just amazing. esp good for indoor shots. You are going to have so much fun with your new camera whatever you end up with.

I just recently retired my D50 for the D7000 and I love it. My SIL has the D5200. I have the old kit lens from my D50 and a 50mm f/1.8 lens. I agree with what the others have said here about both - they have their purposes. If you can afford it right now, get an additional prime lens. I use the 50mm for low light indoor shots, and the kit lens for pretty much everything else.

I agree that you totally need to go to a camera shop and get a "feel" between the Nikon and Canon....I have used them both, but just like the way the Canon feels better......I believe quality and all the stuff is pretty comparable between them it just ends up being preference :)

Totally agree with the 50mm comment, get at least a 1.4 if you want good low light pics. If you can afford it go with the 50mm 1.2

I know nothing about Nikon, I am a Canon girl, though hubby is a Nikon, but can't find where he hides his camera to let you know what he has. LOL!!!

How very exciting for you! I have the lower model of the one your hubby was looking at. I have the Nikon 3100. I haven't run into anything yet that I don't like about it and it takes great pictures when I have my setting correct. LOL. I've been using it mostly all manual mode and I'm REALLY new to that, so sometimes I totally screw it up. But sometimes I get lucky and then those pictures are SO much better than my old camera! :) I have the kit lens and then also a 55-200mm zoom. 90% of the time I use the kit lens. I bust out the big one for soccer and baseball and that's it. I do wish I had a prime lens for indoor stuff too. I think that will be my next purchase.

YAY!! That is awesome!!

I LOVE my Nikon. I had a D40x and upgraded to a D90 4.5 years ago. I am now looking at a D600.....I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can get it this summer.

As much as I would love to suggest the Nikon, I do suggest holding a Canon and Nikon and see how they fit in your hands before you make the purchase.

Good luck!!

Oh yeah Kim, is right, they feel SO DIFFERENT, I love my Canon but it makes my hands hurt much faster then hubby's Nikon which is more compact.

So I ordered it!! i ordered the nikon D5200, and I got it in a bundle that came with 2 lenses - the kit lense and then a bigger one. it hasn't shipped yet, though,so right now I'm trying to be patient while I wait!!
