Maths/Fractions

in this case i'd try and turn the one that they show the whole fraction into the lowest number possible. then it's easier to figure out the others.
for example number one
14/21 = 2/3 (both numbers can be divided by 7)

then it's easy to see that the 10/? is 2x5/3x5 = 10/15

then you can see that ?/12 = 2x4/3x4 = 8/12

does that make sense?

i hate math. especially fractions :p that page is just painful and i am incapable of helping ^__^

Ha la glad its just not me then,I have to go to parents evening Tuesday so ill ask the teacher to explain it

OK, let's start with the first problem...

5/15 - in it's simplest form reduces to to 1/3
5/15 is the same as 1/3

so for the next part of the problem
1/3 is the same as ?/18
to get there, you need to multiply by 6
so...
1/3 = 6/18

then you keep going
7/21
3/9
2/6
1/3
4/12
You are always simply looking for the multiplier that will make them equivalent.

I just can't handle maths - seriously! Its a bit of a worry when I do payroll for a living ....... good luck with getting your head around it!

I know how to simplify I'm just not getting this am I missing something

30/55= /33=12/ = /66= 44= /11

How to I turn that 30/55 into /33 ?

Sorry if I'm confusing you I'm confusing myself

Ok, for that one you just posted above.

The first thing I'd do is look for the easiest/simplest one, rather than doing them in order so :

30/55 = ?/11

Dividing by 5 to get from 55 to 11 => 30/55 = 6/11

6/11 is the simplest fraction so the rest are easier to work out from there:

Multiply by 3 to get 18/33
Multiply by 2 to get 12/22
Multiply by 6 to get 36/66
Multiply by 4 to get 24/44

Does that help at all, Karen?

Might not be the way they teach it at school - I'm a science teacher not maths but it seems to make sense to me!

but where is the 6 coming from,i can see that you have times everything by 6 but how do you get that 6
you divived the 30 to get 6 yeah ?

I divided the 30 by 5 to get 6 because you have to divide by the same as you did for the bottom number.

I needed to divide by 5 to get to 11, so I had to divide by 5 again to get from 30 to 6.

(It's really hard to explain this in writing!)

Def. get the teachers to sort it then, so much easier to get this sort of stuff in person :)

lol thanks for trying to help,i get half way there then cant remember how i got there,i have discovered today tho that he is in the top class and only 2 other children had this maths sheet the rest was easier so least i know he is top of the class and not struggling to keep up with the others,i have got to see the teacher tomorrow,he has tried to explain it to him today but he is still confused so im going to ask the teacher to give him a little more help on it,
