I live in KK, which is in east Malaysia on the island of Borneo. It's a lot different from KL, but we love KL, too. KL is very much a big city, but still really nice. I do speak Malay, but I could get by just fine without it, especially in a big city like KL. My kids go to a private Chinese school; the international school is very expensive here, plus we thought it'd be fun for the boys to learn Mandarin, even though we don't speak it. Of course every day when Jack is doing his homework, I'm sure HE doesn't think it's so fun, lol. My kids were born here, though, so it would be different if they hadn't been.
The thing I love most about living here is how much people value community. I love getting to know the culture, the people, eating local food (such a great blend of Chinese, Indian and local food). I love that the sun is always shining; people are really friendly, especially to white faces. I feel safe all the time; I know that people watch out for me and my kids wherever we go. I really can't think of much I don't like, except maybe the cockroaches, lol. I do drive, but I've never driven in KL. We love to visit KL but joke that we would never want to live there because we'd be too poor and too fat; there is too much shopping and eating to do there!
