Do you know any magic tricks? Have you ever participated in a magic show? Ever wanted to? Have you ever seen any great magicians? Tried to figure out their tricks?

I remember being 6 and going to Disneyland for the first time. They had a magic shop on Main Street, and I desperately wanted to be a magician at the time. I never did learn any tricks, but I think my souvenir was a small magic kit that had plastic peas, foam pieces and who knows what else. I just vividly remember the texture of those two things and thinking it was weird that there were plastic peas (for the shell game).

What about you? Your kids or family members? Any magicians in the house?

I have not participated. I think they are a lot of fun to watch. I like the wonder. At the same time, I think I'm too logical, and always want figure them out! I forget, usually! :giggle

I love slight of hand, and am purty good at pulling nickles and coins out of kids ears! my dad is amazing. he has all kinds of neat party tricks...and I loved to be a part of them. So far, none of the kids have shown any interest in it? neat questions for the day...has me pondering!
I do have one son, who although barely passing Chemistry, is forever coming home and showing us fun and interesting experiments!

Dagmar was 2 and a half when she figured out her first magic trick. She would put something in her hand, cover it with a cloth, and then take the cloth away (and the thing... shhh!) to reveal her empty hand. I don't think she saw it anywhere else. The first time she did it to me, I was floored! She still loves doing magic tricks and has a set she got for Christmas that she pulls out sometimes.

I love magic. When the kids were small and had some sort of something they perceived as problematic I would tell them, I'd do some mom magic and everything would be alright.. One year they gave me a magic wand from the dollar store and that became the symbol for them coming to me with their problems.. They'd say mum, I need you to use your wand. I still have it and sometimes they still ask me to try using it...

Oh.my.goodness.you.have.no.idea.

I myself had a large magic set as a kid and performed several tricks from it often for family and friends, but my interest didn't last.

Then I met DH, who had just returned to school to finish his degree, but was also working part time as a magician. The day after we met, he took me to see him perform. 26 years later he doesn't perform as often, but he is is still incredibly passionate about magic - the history of it, the tricks, the illusions... on and on and on. Our house is completely filled with it. You name a famous magician and we've probably seen them perform (along with dozens and dozens of less famous ones), and have met many of them. DH organizes the area magic lectures, so we've had lots of magicians as house guests when they are in town. It can be pretty darn cool. :)

DH tried to gets the kids into magic, and they were a bit when they were younger, but not so much these days. DS did perform at a David Blaine show where they had a few members of the local young magicians club warming up the crowd in the lobby though. :)

My son got into it last year, and accumulated several kits for Christmas. We watched the videos and picked out tricks that were easy for him. We also found a few card trick instructions online. There is one very simple card trick that blows away the adults.

I had him practice quite s bit, and he put on a magic show on his birthday. He was so proud of himself. I found it really interesting how he picked up on the "showmanship" aspect from the videos, because I was paying more attention to the mechanics of the tricks.
