I mentioned in our last lunch discussion that I was going to get some Bento boxes. Well, they came!

But, Bento experiment #1 - mixed results.
The plus:
- both boys helped me make their lunches Sunday night and were excited
- they told me what they wanted and got "invested" in it (see that nice project management/pyschology talk?!:giggle)

The minus:
- they only ate half their lunch

The plus:
- at least they ate half their lunch!

Here's what they took today:

Just a few pieces of different things, not too much to overwhelm, but enough to give choices and hopefully get them eating! There is ranch dressing in the little container to go with the veggies. The rounded corner containers have tight fitting lids. I put a folded piece of parchment paper over the veggies before I closed the lid of the box, which also has a tight fitting lid (but an easy open for little fingers - push and lift).

I think I'm going to order 2 more sets and then I'll just make all 4 lunches the same (the boys, mine, and dh's) - but I'll add in a sandwich to dh's so that he doesn't starve.

Yum! I'm coming to your house for lunch. LOL

DD is taking a more traditional Bento tomorrow. Hello Kitty box with salmon rolls. I'll snap some pics and share. I have a feeling her preschool friends are going to be grossed out, but it's her favorite thing to eat right now.

I have been mixing the boys lunch up with a bento box about 3x a week. Ours look very similar to yours, Heather, except I normally take some sort of meat (lunch meat, rotisserie chicken) and add that in as well. With the lunch meat, I have these cute little picks that I use to roll the meat up with. Since this is the boys first time taking a lunch we are still working out how much they will eat, although I am learning that some days it depends on how much they are talking to their friends! :)

i'd say with such good choices in front of them, at least eating half the lunch you know they're eating well. as they continue to get adjusted to eating this style of lunch, you may find that they eat more & more. and like becky said, it always depends on how chatty they are - at least that's true with mine!!

I tried to talk my hubby into those same bentos boxes Heather, but he refused. This year he is making the lunches since I'm going in to work so early in the morning and he saw that a PB&J wouldn't fit with out cutting and he said that cutting the sandwich wasn't happening. {eye roll}

I tried Bento with my son last year. It didn't work. His dumb school makes him keep the lunch boxes outside and the heat just wilts anything that is remotely healthy. Even with ice packs, things were pretty gross. It's a constant battle. I keep telling them they are promoting unhealthy eating.

Oooh! I like that idea of putting rolled meat on picks. I could alternate with fruit chunks so they might actually eat them. My kids are so picky, and I really don't understand why because dh and I are quite adventurous in our eating.

I was just reading about the 2-bite rule. Kids don't have to finish their plate, but they must eat at least 2 bites of everything on their plate. I think we're going to start doing that.

Oooh looks fantastic Heather! I'm envious of the sheer volume of veggies in there...yay for healthful choices!!

And I'm excited to see photos, Laura, of the salmon rolls!!

Wonderful, Heather! I've been doing Bentos for Brady each day he goes to pre-K and he LOVES them! He's yet to come home with leftovers!! What I love most is that he's eating such a super healthy lunch loaded with fruits and veggies!

Are those the Pottery Barn Bento Boxes? I've been using an assortment of Easy Lunch Boxes and some cute little bento boxes I found on Amazon, but I really like the compartments in those!

I got mine at LaptopLunches.com - but they are bit pricey. There isn't anything in stores here unfortunately, and I didn't have a chance to check out our local Chinatown.

I want a Bento box! I love that they're so neatly organized. :)

Our girls are staying for lunch full time this year (last year it was just throughout the winter). And...come next week, I'll probably be staying for lunch (at my NEW job *woot*). So I'm going to look at those cool little boxes.

My daughter left her bento lunch box at school last week and I have been checking lost proerty every day. I think someone might have taken a fancy to it, I am not happy and on bento strike at the moment.

Love that lunch....it looks super yummy. I have been packing lunch every day for my son but it is hit or miss whether he eats much. I just threw away a few things today but yesterday he ate everything. Sigh. I hate throwing the left overs away but I don't know how else to do it.

That looks awesome! Do these fit in regular lunch containers? think my kids would love this!

Heather, I don't live that far away, can you pack three lunches and send them this way for us too? :)

They look SOOOOO delish!!

LOL Patti! I could start a home-based business! Except I can barely do my own kids' lunches!
