Hi Ladies. I have to go back to work but I'm not sure what kind of job I'm looking for. We are really struggling financially necessitating us moving in with my mom for a few months then trying to find a cheaper apartment than we have now. I need something relatively low stress (I'm disabled) and part time. I can't really do more than 20 hours a week. Of course I'm hoping for something that pays well since we are having such a rough time. I have a BA in psychology and many credits in special Ed. Those two fields seem to lead to stressful jobs. I'm open to changing fields or even going back to school for something that wouldn't take too long. Any ideas? I was thinking maybe office work, ultra sound, dental assistant. I'd love to know what ideas you might have. This has been a very trying time. We are actually borrowing money from my mom to afford groceries. I know it will eventually work out. I have faith. Thanks so much for your help and ideas! Best wishes, Roni

I'm sorry you are having a tough time financially! I'm not sure what stresses you, but keep in mind that both ultrasound and dental run on schedules. I get stressed when I'm running behind, and particularly with ultrasound sometimes it's bad news that is found... although you are not the person breaking the news, sometimes patients can also see that something is wrong from the pictures they see on your monitor. What about educational counseling? I know the pay is good for private counselors - a good friend does that. She does not seem stressed. She works with families privately to develop plans for remediation and working with school districts.

I'd love to do educational counseling. I think you probably need either a master's or a doctorate though. Maybe I'm wrong...

She does have her masters... I'm not sure if that is required? Maybe so. Sorry I did not think about that

I'm so sorry you are going through this Roni. Hugs!

I think educational counseling is on the up and up. I've heard some buzz about that from friends here too. I know in my state you can get certification through online programs for that. Same with library science. I volunteer in the school library here and I really enjoy it. I'm sure the pay is not as good for that though.

Sorry you're going through a rough time, Roni! Love your positivity through it all! :beat

I wish I had some clear direction for you but I would likely only be guessing. I have also heard good things about educational counseling and library science.

I do pray that a position that fits for you comes your way!! (hug)

I'm sorry this is so hard right now but your attitude will certainly carry you through it! Do you mean stressful physically, or emotionally?

I second Sara's vote for something related to libraries. When I think of "low-stress" the library is one place that comes to mind. Also, what about massage, hypnotherapy and the like?

I dont really have any ideas, because I am not sure of the employment situation in the US. But wanted to wish you luck finding a job thats perfect for you.

Have you thought about working for the local schools? Since you mentioned SpEd maybe there are positions like a teacher assistant. I know in our schools we have what is called a Paraprofessional that works in the classroom with a licensed teacher. I've heard many people tell me that it isn't as stressful as a certified teacher and yet still gratifying to help others. Just a suggestion. :)

Hey there, Roni. I sincerely hope things work out for you. Wish I had a good idea for you but if I had one I would be doing it. Just wanted to say you are not alone. Sometimes it really gets to me when I read about the lives of lucky girls out in the www. I suppose it's jealousy but regardless I have to work very hard at keeping my thoughts on the really good blessings in my life. It's really tough what you are going through and I am sorry. Hang in there. It's tough being patient when your deepest desires that never seemed like big dreams as a young person have now become like an impossible dream as an older wiser gal. Focus on the people in your life that bless you and that you can still be a blessing too. You sure are sweet here at the pad and it's been nice seeing you here. Good luck.

oh roni, i'm so sorry to hear this. i'm sure going through this has been enough stress on you without adding the stress of a job. big hugs.

not knowing you very well, i think it's hard to say what seems like it might be a good fit. i just read an article that said flabotomy is the fastest growing career with decent pay. maybe something like that? that would definitely require going back to school, so maybe you could find something part-time in the meantime.

i agree with joanne, it IS difficult to stay focused on the positives when you're surrounded by so many things you would not choose. but your positive attitude will make all the difference for you while you're going through this. hang in there, andjust keep remembering that it's not a permanent place for you... you can get through and the other side may just hold something amazing!
